THIS IS A MEETING YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS

Join us this Saturday at 11:00 AM for the Talki Foundation Diabetes Support Group meeting at the Hospital Auxiliary Building in Waycross.

Our special guest speaker will be John V. Smith of MedTrust Medical Transport.

John brings a unique perspective that few people ever get to hear. Through his work transporting patients throughout our region, he sees firsthand what happens when diabetes is well-managed—and what happens when it isn't.

We'll discuss:
✅ Diabetic emergencies
✅ Severe low blood sugars
✅ Dehydration and diabetes
✅ Preventing hospitalizations
✅ What EMS sees every day
✅ How patients and families can better prepare for emergencies

Whether you're living with Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, or caring for someone with diabetes, this presentation will provide valuable real-world information that could help save a life.

A Great Day for Health in McIntosh County!

Congratulations to the McIntosh YMCA on the grand opening of its new location at 5873 Highway 17 in Darien.

The YMCA has long been a place where people of all ages can improve their health, stay active, build friendships, and strengthen their communities. As the Talki Foundation continues its mission to improve diabetes education and overall wellness across McIntosh County, we're excited to see new opportunities for healthy living become available right here at home.

Regular physical activity is one of the most powerful tools we have for preventing and managing chronic conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. Having a strong community resource like the YMCA helps make those healthy choices more accessible for everyone.

We encourage our friends, neighbors, and members of the diabetes community to stop by, take a tour, and learn more about the programs available.

Congratulations to the YMCA of Coastal Georgia and the entire McIntosh County team on this exciting new chapter.

No complaints. No hesitation. Just a little warrior doing what he has to do. This is why we fight. For every child managing diabetes with more grace than most adults could.

72 hours old.

He fit in the palm of my hand.

Tiny paws. Tiny nose. Fighting for every ni**le feeding every few hours around the clock.

Today, he's Leo the diabetic alert dog who has helps change lives, comfort people in their toughest moments, and becomes the heart of our families.

But before all of that, he was just this little guy. A tiny little chocolate chip.

Sometimes the biggest stories start with the smallest beginnings. ❤️

Have diabetes or high blood pressure or maybe even both? One treatment option that research has shown to help control or even lower your numbers is exercise.

Even more good news: It doesn’t have to be too rigorous. Studies show that walking just a few minutes a day or simple resistance exercises, such as wall squats or jumping jacks, make a difference in your health.

“There is remarkable data that shows regular exercise can lower A1C by a minimum of .6 percent, .7 percent and beyond,” says Dr. Chandler Brandenburg, physician with St. Joseph’s/Candler Primary Care in Pembroke.

“If you think about the oral medications we use, they have similar data that they can lower A1C by around 1 percent. So, there’s a possibility if you start exercising you can get rid of one of your medicines.”

(Of course, never stop taking any of your medications without consulting with your doctor.)

Outside of just blood sugar control, exercise lowers your risk of heart disease, and heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in people with diabetes, Dr. Brandenburg says.

“Even 500 steps a day, which is very minimum if you are supposed to take 10,000, can reduce heart disease risk of death by two to nine percent in diabetic patients,” Dr. Brandenburg says. “Exercise is also good for other body systems, mental health, osteoporosis and really everything.”

Brandenburg explains In the comments the many benefits of exercise for people living with different types of diabetes.
