We wrapped up the Earth Tribe program year on a high note with an adventurous day on Jekyll Island thanks to a field trip grant from the Guy Harvey Foundation. Scouts spent Friday night continuing work on soil and water conservation and fish and wildlife management merit badges. They demonstrated the effects of pollution on waterways and coastlines, learned to ID species of sea turtles and tell their s*x, and performed "necropsies" on "deceased" sea turtles, learning about the negative effects mankind has on our marine life.
On Saturday, they worked on conservation projects at camp before heading out for a 10-hours day on Jekyll. Working with the Tidelands 4-H center, they learned about marine life, native snakes, and beach ecology at the interpretive center and beach walk at Great Dunes. Half the group was lucky enough to be at the right place and time to watch the release of two sea turtles from the Sea Turtle Center. The Scouts also got to do beach seining, though the winds and waves weren't very yielding. After the beach, the group headed for field trip part two at the Sea Turtle Center, getting to see some patients in care and learning more about how they can help protect these endangered species. While waiting for dinner, we took a side quest and hiked to the old amphitheatre and the backside of one of the ponds to view other wildlife, like Roseate Spoonbills.
We grabbed dinner to go from Red Bugs pizza and headed out to Clam Creek, where the tide was out far enough to yield a lot of treasures with an after dinner beach walk. We picked up trash, and five Scouts got really down and dirty to free a tire that had been buried on the beach. We spent late evening on Driftwood Beach to wrap up our soil and water conservation learning. We found lots of whelks, jelly fish, and ghost crabs on our walk.
On Sunday, we spent our chapel time participating in Scouts Read Sacred Texts day, then continued with trash pickups for international Scouts Trash the Trash day. A few projects got wrapped up, and we said our goodbyes until we reunite in September to put on an Earth Tribe day for our Cub Scouts.
Thank you again to all the leaders who gave their time to our program weekends, and all the friends who gave support in various forms throughout.
