Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Earth Tribe Skills Weekend at Camp Tolochee. We had great attendance and perfect weather for a weekend of outdoor ethics adventures. We were especially excited to welcome participants from Southwest Florida Council, Greater Alabama Council, and Coastal Carolina Council.

On Sunday, we participated in the Scouting for Clean Waterways coastal cleanup on Blythe Island with the following results:
· 1.5 hours x 36 participants = 54 service hours
· 24 bags of trash collected = 111.60 lbs
· Construction debris collected = 164.15 lbs
· Total trash weight = 275.75 lbs
Scouts and Scouters were eligible to earn both the Conservation Good Turn and Scouting for Clean Waterways patches with their participation

Mark your calendars for our 2027 program dates:

March 12-14 - Earth Tribe Outdoor Ethics Weekend (formerly Skills Weekend)

April 23-25 - Earth Tribe Spring Program Weekend
Champions of Nature Challenge

September 24-26 - Earth Tribe Fall Program Weekend

We wrapped up the Earth Tribe program year on a high note with an adventurous day on Jekyll Island thanks to a field trip grant from the Guy Harvey Foundation. Scouts spent Friday night continuing work on soil and water conservation and fish and wildlife management merit badges. They demonstrated the effects of pollution on waterways and coastlines, learned to ID species of sea turtles and tell their s*x, and performed "necropsies" on "deceased" sea turtles, learning about the negative effects mankind has on our marine life.

On Saturday, they worked on conservation projects at camp before heading out for a 10-hours day on Jekyll. Working with the Tidelands 4-H center, they learned about marine life, native snakes, and beach ecology at the interpretive center and beach walk at Great Dunes. Half the group was lucky enough to be at the right place and time to watch the release of two sea turtles from the Sea Turtle Center. The Scouts also got to do beach seining, though the winds and waves weren't very yielding. After the beach, the group headed for field trip part two at the Sea Turtle Center, getting to see some patients in care and learning more about how they can help protect these endangered species. While waiting for dinner, we took a side quest and hiked to the old amphitheatre and the backside of one of the ponds to view other wildlife, like Roseate Spoonbills.

We grabbed dinner to go from Red Bugs pizza and headed out to Clam Creek, where the tide was out far enough to yield a lot of treasures with an after dinner beach walk. We picked up trash, and five Scouts got really down and dirty to free a tire that had been buried on the beach. We spent late evening on Driftwood Beach to wrap up our soil and water conservation learning. We found lots of whelks, jelly fish, and ghost crabs on our walk.

On Sunday, we spent our chapel time participating in Scouts Read Sacred Texts day, then continued with trash pickups for international Scouts Trash the Trash day. A few projects got wrapped up, and we said our goodbyes until we reunite in September to put on an Earth Tribe day for our Cub Scouts.

Thank you again to all the leaders who gave their time to our program weekends, and all the friends who gave support in various forms throughout.

If you're interested in having your Scout join us for a future Earth Tribe program, please email program director Lisa Scarbrough at [email protected] for more information.

Every day is Earth Day when you're a member of the Coastal Georgia Council Earth Tribe. Throughout this program year, Scouts have become better stewards of the environment while learning from professionals in conservation fields and earning merit badges. They've given numerous hours in service through coastal cleanups, building bird houses, building oyster boxes with the DNR, planting pollinator gardens, removing invasive species, and making eco bricks, among many other activities. Over the course of three weekend campouts, they've learned about wildland fire management, forestry practices to protect threatened species, erosion prevention, effects of water pollution, leave no trace in the outdoors, and sustainability in their practices at home.

Our final weekend program will take place in May where the Scouts will wrap up the last of their merit badge work on soil and water conservation and wildlife management, spending a day on Jekyll Island.

Thank you to our friends, families, and community partners who have given time and resources for our program this year. We couldn't do it without you!
