PIA of Minnesota will be present at the Twin Cities Insurance Club meeting today to hear Mike Rothman, Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Commerce give an overview of DOC and his first years in office with commentary on importance of Minnesota's insurance industry and impact on our economy. He will also discuss the DOC reorganization activities; Disaster Preparedness & Response plus Financial Literacy, Recent Enforcement Actions. He will give an update on the Minnesota Comprehensive Health Association and Regulatory and Legislation. We hope to see you there!

The National Weather Service, the Minnesota Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, and other state, county and local agencies come together to host Severe Weather Awareness Week activities.

Today, Thursday April 14, 2016 simulated tornado watches and warnings will be issued to test the statewide warning and communications systems. All counties in Minnesota normally participate in the first drill at 1:45 p.m. unless actual severe weather is expected.

The schedule is as follows:
Afternoon Tornado Drill April 14, 2016 - 1:45 p.m.
The drill traditionally occurs on Thursday afternoon at 1:45 p.m., when jurisdictions across Minnesota sound their outdoor warning sirens. Schools, businesses and other facilities are encouraged to conduct a tornado drill at this time to practice their tornado sheltering plans.

Evening Tornado Drill April 14, 2016- 6:55 p.m.
The reason for a 6:55 p.m. drill is that severe weather including tornadoes occurs most often between 3 and 8 p.m. The statewide 1:45 p.m. drill gives institutions, first-shift and day workers a time to practice, but it does not allow second-shift workers the same opportunity. The 6:55 p.m. tornado drill also allows families to practice their sheltering plans

Home Inventories Go Digital: Half of Americans lack a home inventory to help in the event of a tragedy. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) makes it easy for consumers to create a digital inventory of their belongings with the myHOME Scr.APP.book app. "You can literally just walk around your home. Take photos, open drawers, open up the doors, let everything be seen on the app and start your physical inventory," says NAIC President and Missouri Insurance Director John Huff. Digital inventories can even help consumers determine how much insurance coverage they need.

DEADLINE APPROACHING TO SUBMIT A 2016 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION PIA of Minnesota is offering assistance to high school seniors by providing two scholarships to relatives of PIA Members or their employees, as follows: 1) $1,000 General Scholarship; 2) $1,500 insurance and Risk Management Studies.
