Today the California Fish and Game Commission unanimously voted to approve an emergency regulation to strengthen fishing gear restrictions to improve public safety and reduce white shark catch in California beaches and piers.

This emergency regulation will reduce hook size and prohibit wire leaders up to 1000 miles from shore. However, the Department and Commission did not include our recommendations to ban chum and live bait and the use of drones to transport bait to deeper waters.

This is an improvement that will help Fish and Wildlife officers enforce shark fishing near public piers and beaches. However, it is not a complete solution to impacts on sharks or completely increase public safety. We will be monitoring white shark -human interactions and shark fishing at public piers and beaches during the emergency regulation period, and pursue permanent protective language during the Standard Regulatory period following December 2026.

Right now, some of the largest and most pristine marine protected areas in the world are being opened to commercial fishing. That includes Papahānaumokuākea in Hawaii—an area the size of all our national parks combined, with deep cultural meaning to Native Hawaiians—and Rose Atoll in American Samoa.

These sanctuaries exist for a reason. They protect sharks, sea turtles, and seabirds from being killed as bycatch. They let fish populations rebuild so there's actually more fish available to commercial fishers outside the protected areas. Scientists have shown this works: protected reefs increase fish abundance by as much as 50% in nearby waters. But that only matters if we keep these areas protected.

A federal court in Hawaii has already ruled in August that the government doesn't have the authority to do this. But the fight isn't over—and these waters need voices behind them right now. If this is something you care about, please sign the petition to the Secretary of Commerce and Congress. Anyone else watching this happen and feeling like it's wrong? What would you want someone to do if this was your home waters?
