Shark Stewards is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting ocean health by saving endangered sharks and rays from extinction, and protecting critical marine habitat. Our community loves the ocean and ocean life, including ocean adventure, and we work together using social media to effect change in policy and actions to save sharks and the ocean.

Greenland propose cull, offers bounty for Greenland sharks to protect halibut fishery. It takes 150 years for this species to sexually mature and they can live up to 500 years! This effort could completely wipe out a large population that does not only live in Greenland waters.

Not all sharks have to swim to breath but many of the families including the Laminidae and Sphyrnidae do need to swim or they suffocate. These sharks die on longlines or in nets if not released within a few minutes to a few hours.

This is called Ram ventilation. Other sharks and most of the rays use a method called Buccal Ventilation where they actively pump water from their spiracles past their gills.

Supporting habitat supports ocean health- MPA expansion and improvements proposed in California- we are supporting one with out Golden Gate MPA Collaborative at Duxbury Reef. The Fish and Game Commission will decide in Sacramento October 16- we have a petition to add your support Shark Stewards
