Music Farming is excited to announce the grant recipients of our Fall 2023 funding cycle. During this cycle, we disbursed $150,000 in grants to eight organizations supporting music education in communities nationwide.

Asbury Park Music Foundation
Newport Festivals Foundation
Preservation Hall Foundation
Notes for Notes
Education Through Music
Boulder Arts Council
Guitars Over Guns
Stillwater Music

At Music Farming, our vision is to create a world where music education is available to all who want it; a world where every student can experience the pure joy of creating music. By collecting membership dues from businesses and contributing those funds to nonprofit music education organizations, we put teachers in students’ lives, instruments in their hands, and music in their future.
We encourage businesses to join us as we identify organizations and educators who keep music alive in their local communities by providing access to instruction, instruments, and equipment, and inspiring students of all ages to achieve their creative goals.
Music Farming is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that keeps music education thriving, and has zero ties to actual farming, chickens, and almanacs. www.musicfarming.org

Notes for Notes: (N4N) is requesting funding to support music programming in Atlanta, GA. N4N is consistently looking for new and innovative ways to increase outreach and impact in the markets we serve. In Atlanta, we are currently exploring partnerships with the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) system and local community centers in addition to our current partnership with Covenant House Atlanta. Youth are often faced with major life decisions that will further impact and guide their futures and by offering culturally relevant music programming, we are providing an escape, even if only temporarily, where youth can freely express themselves and process their emotions. Producer Jen Hodges, has had the privilege of working with youth in Atlanta for 8 years. She has worked through many different avenues within Notes for Notes including in-person and digital programming. Jen has witnessed music acting as a cathartic outlet with those whose voices go unheard and underrepresented in society and how it also helps youth feel valued and have their voices heard.

Throughout this grant term youth will be challenged to create a 3-5 song EP that showcases their talents and personal growth. Youth develop their musical skills in playing, composing, and producing, all while nurturing confidence, aptitude, and a deeper passion for music with every song they create. Funding provided will be used to support outreach and music education programming in Atlanta, GA. With no physical Studio currently in Atlanta, we have relied on local partnerships and the flexibility of N4N Producer Jen to provide programming in a mobile capacity to youth. Utilizing a mobile rig composed of industry standard instruments and equipment, Jen is able to serve a multitude of Atlanta youth regardless of location. N4N Producer’s play a pivotal role in shaping the experience and success of each youth that participates in N4N programing. Producers nurture youth’s talents, while uplifting and encouraging a life-long love for music. Their dedication inspires a deep sense of commitment and fosters a rich learning environment for youth members. Therefore, we take the responsibility of providing the talented N4N Producers, who are local artists, with competitive wages very seriously. Funding provided by Music Farming will be utilized to support music programming and supplement Producer salaries in Atlanta."

Stillwater Music
"Stillwater student bands may be found performing throughout the Four Corners in schools and at festivals, community events and fundraisers for other area nonprofits organizations. These performances increase Stillwater students’ confidence and group skills while providing high quality entertainment and providing added draw to some 50 community events annually.

Kids with disabilities find joy and connection with their “abled” peers through music and dance, and kids from low income families get to play music unimpeded by financial limitations.

Our project would:
-Train 2 instructors to teach inclusive classes
-Expand inclusive classes to 3 additional schools
-Secure full funding for youth scholarships for the year

Newport Festivals Foundation
"Success is a child falling in love with music while taking our
lessons—particularly a student who otherwise would not have
been able to learn their instrument. Our dream is to someday
have a student who took their first lesson with Newport
Festivals Foundation headline a stage at our Newport Folk or
Jazz Festivals."

Guitars Over Guns
"GOGO Studios provides access to a safe space where youth explore, create, and find caring support systems in their home neighborhoods, with in-community professional musicians employed as mentors. These studios foster their musical creativity outside of traditional settings and pursue ambitious recording, engineering, and performance projects with professional gear and hands-on mentor support alongside baked-in mental health resources (for both students and mentors). Activities include individual instrument/arts instruction, ensemble coaching, live performance and exhibition opportunities, recording sessions, and music video creation. Students and mentors have access to a fully equipped studio, allowing them to use industry-standard technology and giving youth opportunities to develop original music and learn vital, career-track skills in music production and engineering.

These local community studios “funnel in” high-need youth who seek–yet have been turned away from–other programs due to academic status and other factors. The studio “hub” model puts students in the driver’s seat creatively while still leveraging the mentor-based model, working with professional artists and creatives to boost skills toward creative outputs (album releases, media portfolios, YouTube channels). This model’s goal is to provide an ecosystem of arts-based youth development opportunities centered in professionally equipped, accessible, mentor-guided community spaces amplified by the resources and support of mission-aligned partners and supporters."

Education Through Music
After reading media stories about the low-quality education New York City students received, Education Through Music founders Edmund Schroeder and Eldon Mayer decided they wanted to take action. After seeing first-hand a school utilizing music education to improve educational outcomes, they decided to collaborate in 1991 to provide music education to schools that did not have the resources to teach their children the arts. Since then, Education Through Music has grown into an organization that provides access to music education to thousands of children, giving them the access they deserve.

Beats By Girlz is the promise of a future - one where traditionally marginalized gender identities are able to visualize and realize their full potential. We do this important work by giving them access to the tools, resources, education, and community necessary to foster growth. Music is the skeleton key we use to open the door to technology parity and justice, not only in the music industry but in all tech-related fields where women and gender minorities are underrepresented.
