It all started in 2010 with one movement class at the San Francisco County Jail. Since that day, SDP has created many movement programs for underserved people in the S.F. We've touched people's lives through dance and witnessed people transform physically and emotionally, improving their self-esteem and expressing a desire to make positive changes in their lives. We firmly believe that everyone ca
n dance – from the able-bodied to people in wheelchairs, hospitals, and other constraining circumstances. Many of those who participate in SDP’s programs experience and continue to face significant life challenges, including poverty, substance abuse, physical trauma, and/or mental health issues. These traumas can block our ability to experience a sense of self and/or connection with others. SDP classes help participants cultivate an internal sense of empowerment and provide them with a bodily sense of freedom. Using creative movement exercises taught by qualified dance teachers, participants learn how to deal with their limitations and challenging personal situations and make better life choices. In addition to its outreach programs, SDP holds classes for the general public, helping to create a strong sense of community and purpose in this work. Grants and donations are used to fund SDP’s outreach programs.
