Don't be like Josh from Airbud. Don't let it loose!

When people release pets into the wild, like exotic fish, reptiles, and housecats, they may negatively impact Michigan's native ecosystems.

Never release a pet into the wild. Most of the pets that are released to the wild do not survive, and those that do run the risk of becoming an invasive species.

Keep an eye out for Eurasian watermilfoil!

Eurasian watermilfoil is an invasive species most commonly found in still or slow-moving freshwater. It forms large, dense mats of vegetation that block sunlight, displace native plants, degrade fish habitats, clog waterways, and hinder recreational water activities.

to one of our crew members showing off a big Purple Jewelweed!

Though beautiful, this invasive can spread quickly and crowd out native plants. It even shoots its seeds several feet away! Every pull helps our ecosystems thrive. 🌱

As it’s getting warmer, it’s important to brush up on the practices that help to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species!

When it comes to recreational boating, remember Clean, Drain, and Dry. These are the three key steps to prevent aquatic hitchhikers.

Clean: Remove any plants, animals, or mud that may have attached itself to your boat, equipment, or trailer prior to leaving the water access. Use a stiff brush to scrub the hull and rinse with water.
Drain: Drain any water from your boat, motor, bladder tanks, and bilge before leaving water access.
Dry: Dry everything for five days before relocating to new body of water. If that isn't possible, use a towel to dry before reuse.

This week is Emerald Ash Borer Awareness Week! (May 17th-23rd)

Emerald Ash Borer is an invasive beetle originating from Asia. These beetles feed on the underside of ash tree bark, cutting off the tree’s ability to transport nutrients and water. This leads to a 99% morality rate for ash trees.

First found in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in 2005, Emerald Ash Borer have killed millions of ash trees in the state.

One of the most common ways that Emerald Ash Borer spreads is through the transport of firewood. This is an excellent opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of purchasing and burning local firewood. Burn it where you buy it!

"Okay, I never see you at the Aquatic Invasive Species Blitz."

Catch our crews at boat launches across the EUP this summer, chopping it up with boaters about aquatic invasive species. Maybe you can even pick up some swag! 🤩

Shoutout to our crew leader Rex (pictured here), who graduated from this spring. Smash that like button to tell Rex you're proud of him. 🏅
