Wisconsin Large Animal Emergency Response WLAER is dedicated to educating emergency response, animal control, and veterinary personnel in technical emergency rescue involving large animals.

Wisconsin Large Animal Emergency Response (WLAER) is nonprofit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to educating emergency response, animal control, and veterinary personnel in technical emergency response involving large animals – primarily horses and cattle. WLAER also serves in a support and response role for large animal emergencies. Whether an animal is in a trailer accident, submerged in mud or water, trapped into a ravine, cast in a stall, or has fallen on barnyard ice and cannot get up, it is human nature to want to help. But large animals can be unpredictable, especially when in desperate, life or death situations. When stressed and trapped, livestock can injure themselves, property, and the people around them. Further injury to the animal, as well as to the person who seeks to aid the animal, can occur if the rescue is not performed in an organized, efficient, and safe manner. Wisconsin Large Animal Emergency Response exists to increase survival rates of livestock being handled during emergencies while increasing the safety and efficiency of first responders and veterinarians by implementing training programs and assisting with responses.

We would like to give a shout out to Miller-Bradford & Risberg, Inc. Deforest branch for the loan of a Case mini excavator during last week's UW School of Veterinary Medicine's fall selective. Having this tool available to help teach the students, move equipment, and dig holes to make simulated mud pits was invaluable to us. Thank you!

The final day of the UW School of Veterinary Medicine's fall selective ended with a full day of putting everything the students have learned this week into practice. It started with a beautiful morning to roll our custom CornPro Trailers trailer. Once the trailer was rolled, students worked through safe trailer extractions, patient packaging, and using various lifting sytems with a Häst Large Animal Rescue Equipment tripod. The afternoon focused on mud entrapment rescues using the Häst bipod as well as a Case mini excavator.

Thank you to all the students for their hard work this week. You did great and we hope you take these skills out into your communities after graduation.

During days three and four of the UW School of Veterinary Medicine Fall Selective students learned about medical management of patients, euthanasia, the importance of critical incident debrief, roadway trailer incidents, water, ice and mud rescues. Hand-on labs continued to build on the previous day's learning with confined space operations, patient packaging, basic rope familiarization, and available options for lifting patients.

It's UW School of Veterinary Medicine Fall Selective time. WLAER is spending a week with thirteen 3rd year veterinary students teaching them technical large animal rescue skills. Each day is a combination of lecture and hands-on learning. Day one and two introduced animal behavior, safety, basic manipulations, and introduction to rope sytems - we'll build on these skills throughout the rest of the week as we tackle more complex scenarios!

Yesterday, our volunteers responded to assist Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts with a horse who had been stranded by a flooded river. Working with the local veterinarian and area fire rescue personnel, including those trained in swift water rescue, the horse was brought over to safe ground. Rescues like this are truly a team effort.
