The Kiwanis Club of Saugerties was honored to welcome Linda Armour, Coordinator of Repair Cafe Saugerties, as our guest speaker at this month’s meeting.

Linda shared the inspiring story of the Repair Café movement, which began in 2009 in the Netherlands and has since grown to more than 4,000 Repair Cafés around the world. The mission is to teach repair skills, help people extend the life of their belongings, and reduce unnecessary waste sent to landfills.

Our local Repair Cafe Saugerties, held three times a year at the Saugerties Senior Center, brings together volunteer “fixers” who generously share their talents to repair items such as lamps, small electrical devices, jewelry, guitars, clothing, bicycles, furniture, sewing machines, and more. Local businesses, including Smith Hardware, often support the effort with supplies and assistance.

The Hudson Valley is home to nearly 90 Repair Cafés, and volunteers are always welcome. Whether you have a skill to share, would like to learn simple repairs such as zipper fixes, or can help greet and guide visitors, there is a place for you.

Thank you, Linda, for an informative and inspiring presentation, and thank you to everyone who helps make Repair Cafe Saugerties a wonderful example of neighbors helping neighbors.

🎂🇺🇸 What is a birthday party without cake?

To celebrate America’s 250th birthday, the Kiwanis Club of Saugerties is teaming up with The Meltaway Bakery to serve cake to approximately 1,300 people at Cantine Field on July 4th.

The celebration will feature a three-tiered birthday cake, ten sheet cakes, community spirit, and a giant chorus of “Happy Birthday USA!”

We’re proud to help bring our community together for this historic milestone and grateful to The Meltaway Bakery, Drew Pineiro, and everyone helping make the event possible.

The Saugerties Public Library continues to be an important community resource in Saugerties, and the Kiwanis Club of Saugerties was proud to support its programming efforts with our annual donation.

At a recent club meeting, we welcomed Library representative Tiffany Lydecker, who shared many of the valuable services and programs available to local residents through the library. Beyond books, the library offers access to e-books, audiobooks, e-magazines, museum passes, live online author talks, cooking demonstrations, estate planning seminars, language classes, and much more. Community members can even borrow items like a VCR, metal detector, pickleball sets, and bocce equipment.

The presentation was a wonderful reminder that today’s public libraries serve as vibrant community centers for learning, entertainment, technology, and connection for people of all ages.

Pictured with Tiffany are Kiwanis Club officers and members Peg Nau, Joanne Melville, Deb Lawrence, and Beth Bechtold.

Investing in the Future of Saugerties

The Kiwanis Club of Saugerties is proud to continue a tradition that has supported local students for decades.

Since the 1980s, the club has awarded scholarships to graduating seniors from Saugerties Central School District. What began with just a few scholarships each year has grown into a major community commitment. Today, the club annually awards more than $30,000 in scholarships to college-bound seniors.

Thanks to the success of the Hudson Valley Garlic Festival and the continued support of the community, the number of scholarships has expanded significantly. The club now awards 10 scholarships annually, and last year increased that number to 13 students due to strong interest from eligible applicants.

Service to the community remains an important part of the scholarship application process, reflecting the Kiwanis mission of helping children and strengthening the community.

Scholarship applications are now available at the High School Guidance Office.

We are honored to support the next generation of leaders and wish all applicants the very best.

The Kiwanis Club of Saugerties is proud to support Arm-of-the-Sea Theater, one of our community’s most unique and inspiring cultural treasures. Known for its imaginative puppet theater, live music, and powerful storytelling, Arm-of-the-Sea has brought creativity, wonder, and local pride to audiences for decades.

Recently, KCOS members presented a donation to Patrick Wadden of Arm-of-the-Sea Theater to help support the construction of an ADA-accessible ramp, helping ensure that more people can enjoy everything this special organization has to offer.

We are honored to support groups like Arm-of-the-Sea that make Saugerties a more vibrant, welcoming, and connected community. 🎭❤️

The Kiwanis Club of Saugerties is proud to support leadership opportunities for local students through sponsorship of the American Legion Auxiliary Empire Girls State and Boys State programs.

Each year, these respected programs give young people the chance to experience government, citizenship, leadership, and public service in a hands-on way. Participants return with greater confidence, stronger civic understanding, and valuable skills that will serve them for years to come.

We are honored to help make these opportunities possible for students in our community and congratulate all those selected to represent Saugerties Central School District this year.

Supporting youth leadership today helps build a stronger tomorrow.

🎉 Congratulations to Our Girls State Representatives! We are proud to recognize (left to right) Harleigh Schoonmaker and JoElle Luke for their selection to attend the 2026 American Legion Auxiliary Empire Girls State program!

📍 SUNY Brockport, Brockport, NY
📅 June 30 – July 6, 2026

Empire Girls State is a prestigious, non-partisan program designed to give high school juniors a hands-on experience in government and civic leadership. Throughout the week, participants will:
✔️ Run mock campaigns
✔️ Write and debate legislation
✔️ Learn how government operates at all levels
✔️ Take part in ceremonies honoring our nation and its values

This immersive experience helps young women develop a deeper understanding of citizenship, leadership, and their role in shaping our future.

We are excited to see Harleigh and JoElle represent our community with pride!
