The Kiwanis Club of Saugerties was honored to welcome Linda Armour, Coordinator of Repair Cafe Saugerties, as our guest speaker at this month’s meeting.
Linda shared the inspiring story of the Repair Café movement, which began in 2009 in the Netherlands and has since grown to more than 4,000 Repair Cafés around the world. The mission is to teach repair skills, help people extend the life of their belongings, and reduce unnecessary waste sent to landfills.
Our local Repair Cafe Saugerties, held three times a year at the Saugerties Senior Center, brings together volunteer “fixers” who generously share their talents to repair items such as lamps, small electrical devices, jewelry, guitars, clothing, bicycles, furniture, sewing machines, and more. Local businesses, including Smith Hardware, often support the effort with supplies and assistance.
The Hudson Valley is home to nearly 90 Repair Cafés, and volunteers are always welcome. Whether you have a skill to share, would like to learn simple repairs such as zipper fixes, or can help greet and guide visitors, there is a place for you.
Thank you, Linda, for an informative and inspiring presentation, and thank you to everyone who helps make Repair Cafe Saugerties a wonderful example of neighbors helping neighbors.
