NEW AUTOMATIC DRAFT REGISTRATION | Automatic registration of men potentially eligible for the military draft will take effect by December, according to the government agency that maintains a database of who could be called up to serve in a crisis.

The new rule, mandated by defense policy legislation passed by Congress last year, will register men automatically rather than require them to register themselves within 30 days of their 18th birthdays.

The American Legion Department of Ohio extends its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and fellow service members of the Ohio Air National Guard airmen who tragically lost their lives in the recent KC-135 refueling aircraft incident while supporting military operations overseas.

Three of the six airmen who perished in the crash were members of the Ohio Air National Guard’s 121st Air Refueling Wing based at Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base in Columbus. These brave Ohioans served their state and nation with honor, answering the call to duty far from home and making the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom.

On behalf of the veterans and members of The American Legion across the State of Ohio, we stand in solemn gratitude for their service and sacrifice. We mourn alongside their families, their fellow airmen, and the entire Ohio National Guard community during this time of profound loss.

Ohio has a proud tradition of military service, and these airmen embodied the very best of that legacy, dedication, courage, and commitment to something greater than themselves. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten, and their memory will live on in the hearts of a grateful state and nation.

May God bring comfort to their families and loved ones, strength to their fellow service members, and peace to all who mourn their loss.
