Dear Friends and Supporters,
We have an important update to share with you: Based on data from our investigations to date and counsel from our advisors, we are dedicating our next fiscal year (which started July 1) to research on extracellular vesicles (EVs). EVs are a promising area that, while recently exploding in cancer research, have not yet been exploited in neurological diseases, like MS. Yet early research indicates that EVs may play a role in myelin formation.

Learn more about why we feel EVs hold such promise, and why we are so excited:

The Myelin Repair Foundation is an innovative research foundation focusing on developing drug therapies for multiple sclerosis patients.

Check out this story, "How a white powder couldn't pass U.S. Customs but could save MS patients" - an inside look into what the MRF faced with getting guanabenz (MRF-008) into clinical trials.

The nonprofit Myelin Repair Foundation in Saratoga and the National Institutes of Health will take an out-of-production, generic high blood pressure treatment into a clinical trial in multiple sclerosis.

Exciting new research out of MRF-funded labs this week!

"Two drugs already on the market — an antifungal and a steroid — may potentially take on new roles as treatments for multiple sclerosis. According to a study published in Nature [...] researchers discovered that these drugs may activate stem cells in the brain to stimulate myelin producing cells and repair white matter, which is damaged in multiple sclerosis."

The latest from our lab at the University of Chicago regarding MRF's recent projects and clinical development: researchers from the University of Chicago show that an FDA-approved drug for high blood pressure, guanabenz, prevents myelin loss and alleviates clinical symptoms of MS in animal models.

"A recent study found evidence that guanabenz, a drug approved for oral administration for hypertension, enhances this stress response pathway independent of its anti-hypertension actions.

The Myelin Repair Foundation — which funded this work and supporting studies as part of a long-term, multi-institutional effort to identify potential therapeutics — has entered into a cooperative agreement with the National Institutes of Health to assess guanabenz as a therapeutic candidate in MS clinical studies."

Guanabenz, an FDA-approved drug for hypertension, appears to prevent myelin loss and alleviates symptoms of MS by enhancing innate cellular protective response, according to a new study by scientis...

In case you missed it: iConquerMS is a new website geared towards conquering MS through the sharing of patient symptoms and experiences.

While the MRF is working hard to produce breakthrough medicines to treat this debilitating disease, there's still a lot we don't know about its cause or variations in severity. Information sharing and collection could help address just that.

Check them out to learn more about the importance of information collection in tackling diseases: https://iconquerms.org/about

People living with multiple sclerosis can play a major role in conquering this disease. When you contribute your health information and share your ideas about topics you care about, you enable researchers to better understand, treat, and ultimately cure MS.
