We are so lucky to have the support of the Jason Morris Judo Center as they come to camp every year to work with our athletes!

Judo offers numerous benefits for individuals with blindness/visual impairment, including improved physical skills, confidence, and social interaction, while following specific rules tailored for their needs.

Benefits of Judo for the Visually Impaired
Motor Skills Development: Judo helps visually impaired individuals improve their balance, coordination, and body awareness. Learning to fall safely is crucial, as it reduces the risk of injury in everyday life.

Psychological Advantages: Engaging in Judo fosters independence and self-confidence. It encourages our campers to take initiative and manage their movements without relying on others.
..and it is highly enjoyed by all! For more information on Camp Abilities Saratoga, head to https://campabilitiessaratoga.org/

Another event enjoyed by our CAS athletes is Tandem Biking, which utilizes a bicycle built for two riders โ€” one in the front (the Pilot or Captain) and one in the back (the Stoker or Passenger). It is a popular, empowering activity for people who are blind or have low vision.

How It Works
Pilot (Captain): The sighted rider steers, controls brakes and gears, and communicates route information to the stoker. They act as the โ€œeyesโ€ and โ€œvoiceโ€ of the team.

Stoker (Passenger): The visually impaired rider focuses on pedaling power, responding instantly to verbal cues and maintaining a steady cadence.

It's not ALL about sports and physical activity during camp week. Sometimes we need to kick back and just...well, have a party! One very popular, and certainly very fun, way to do this is with a beach party followed by ice cream at the very popular Brown's Beach located on Saratoga Lake. In addition to fun at the beach, Mother Nature does her share to provide calm lake waters and some truly stunning late summer skies and sunsets. It is unquestionably a special night!

Soccer is one of the many daytime sports activities offered to our campers. Also known as "Blind Soccer" or "5-A-Side Football," it is specifically designed for athletes with complete blindness, very low vision, or no light perception, and is played under modified FIFA rules. Players typically wear blackout eye shades, and the soccer ball itself has bells or rattles inside to help players locate it. The specialized rules and equipment help to ensure fair and safe play. And fun!

In addition to various sporting activities scheduled throughout the day, the campers are also able to enjoy several evening sessions!
An ice skating program at Saratogaโ€™s Weibel Rink held by the Saratoga Ice Stars offers the opportunity for these athletes to learn to skate, or to work on strengthening their already present skills. All skaters wear helmets and, depending on their level of ability, also have aides and walkers available for their use!

DID YOU KNOW???
Each year, as camp closes at the end of the week, we can't help but notice the undeniable and impressive changes in these remarkable athletes. Spending a week with their peers, learning how to apply adaptations to the sports they play, and cheering for and encouraging each other results in:

Kids with huge increases in self confidence
Kids who come out of their shells
Kids who have immense gains in their sense of self worth
Kids who gain lifelong friends and are just a text or email away (especially important to those who are the only child in their school with a vision disability)
Kids who have amazing musical or entertainment skills and talents who are energized to perform in front of the crowd

Spending the week at Camp Abilities Saratoga is a week well-spent!
