🌾 This year we celebrate International Year of the Woman Farmer, and we’re proud to lift up the voices of two women-led demonstration farms in New York, along with insights from our Senior Program Manager, Stephanie Castle.

At American Farmland Trust, we know women play a critical
role in agriculture—and their leadership is only growing. A recent AFT report highlights that more women are choosing farming as a career, even as systemic
barriers persist.

🎙️ In this conversation, WXXI "Connections with Evan Dawson," guest host Racquel Stephen sits down with:
Stephanie Castle, Farmland Trust Senior Northeast Women for the Land Program Manager
Amanda Grisa, Homestead Farm
Kyli Stevens, Creek Farms

Together, they explore the challenges women farmers face and ask: What does the future of agriculture look like?

On this final day of we want to highlight the important role beef plays as a year-round local food option for school cafeterias. Beef is rich in vitamins B6 and B12 and one 3-oz serving of beef contains 25 grams of protein! Schools and other institutions looking to incorporate New York beef into their menus can find more information and recipes on the Farm to Institution New York State (FINYS) Local Food Learning Center: https://finys.org/blc/beef

Earlier in May, we gathered at Dirt Rich Farm for a Learning Circle as part of our mentorship pilot and demonstration farm programs with American Farmland Trust . 🌱

Hosted alongside their annual seedling sale, the day was a perfect example of what it means to grow both food and community. Now in its fifth year, the sale plays an important role in the farm’s diversified income—and continues to expand each season.

Dirt Rich Farm leads by example, sharing knowledge, opening their space, and supporting fellow farmers.

At the heart of Women for the Land is the belief that we grow stronger together—and this gathering was proof of that. 💚

We had an amazing day at Barred Owl Brook Farm last Monday! 🦉

We’re grateful for the meaningful conversations about supporting agricultural ecosystems through diverse approaches—like agroforestry—that can improve resilience to extreme weather and provide a low-input feed source for livestock.

🌳Together, we shared experiences, exchanged knowledge, and got our hands in the soil with some planting!

We’re excited to keep this conversation—and this work—growing. Thank you to Harvest New York and Adirondack Harvest for being part of it!
