Saratoga Foundation for Women WorldWide Program Administrator Fredrick Mugo gives a $150 Loan to Patricia Mumbai so she can develop her small business of selling clothes. Your donation of $25 will help a Kenyan woman start a small business. Visit www.saratogafoundation.org
Patricia Mumbai assembled a group of women at her home to meet Mr. Mugo, Board member Matthew Lindroth and myself to hear about the micro loan program. Mr. Mugo explained how the program works and the importance of meeting each week at Patricia’s home to make a repayment on the loan and discuss their business issues with each other. He encouraged the women to assist each other with any challenges they would face.

Patricia Mumbai has a business where she sells school uniforms, blankets and women’s clothing in the Village of Matanya. She refers to herself as a “moving shop,” she carries gigantic bags of clothing to women’s homes. I asked her how much she sells in one day. She said 2000 Kenyan Shillings, which is $20.00. This does not take into consideration her cost to buy the clothes in the Town of Nyeri which is over an hour north by taxi (matatu) ride, or the transportation cost to get here. With the $150 loan Patricia can buy more stock for her business. Patricia and her husband work on the farm, so Patricia can only spend a couple of days a week hauling her huge sacks of clothes to people’ s homes in the community. She also has two children in school.

An Early Morning Kenya Visitor. Early morning I discovered the cleaning people had left my window open in my room. I closed the window. The windows at Lion’s Court in Nanyuki do not latch firmly, always remaining open a half inch. While writing a daily report on Kenya, I felt someone watching me. I looked up and saw a money with his face pressed against the window watching me. I jumped out of bed, he moved from the window, I made sure it was not a baboon since they can be nasty and dangerous, and I grabbed my camera and carefully opened the door. There he was sitting on the arm rail. His eyes popped out as he saw me and before he ran off I was able to get his picture. I then put all of my possessions in my suitcases, since moneys are fully capable of opening this window and running off with your toothbrush, clothes and other items. People at Lion’s Court said they had heard there was a monkey about. I found this amusing because since being in Africa, home of monkeys, I expected they would not find it a novelty. What fun!
