Sarasota Ocean Preservers is a program for youth and adults that combines beach, kayak, and underwater cleanups with an emphasis on marine life education. SOP officially started in 2014. I wanted to find a way to engage more youth in caring for the environment. Cleanups are held monthly in Sarasota, FL. Our cleanups do not add any additional plastic to the environment. We use reusable bags and glo

ves when gathering marine debris. We have beach, kayak, and underwater cleanups - something for everyone. Join us and gain a new appreciating for the ocean and the amazing creatures that inhabit its waters. If you would like to participate in one (or all) of our cleanups, please contact us, join our page, or follow our website for information on our next cleanup.

In my opinion, beaches have the best bird populations that I have seen in the state.

For starters, does an excellent job protecting nesting shorebirds! I really appreciate when they rope off the center of the southern portion of Lido to deter people from harassing the birds. They also use great signage in multiple languages.

When traveling around the state, I have noticed that several other counties allow dogs on the beaches, which seems to correlate with fewer birds. This makes sense as many of the dogs I have seen at these other beaches are unleashed, thus allowing them to chase the birds which use the beach as a resting/nesting spot. But even leashed dogs have been found to have a negative impact on shore birds, both from their presence and scent.

I hope other counties can do their part in protecting shorebirds by also providing safe areas to rest after long flights and for raising chicks.

Have you ever been hurt by broken glass on the beach?

Despite being a common trash item on our beaches, glass is actually disallowed in Sarasota County parks, which includes our beaches. While most marine debris directly affects wildlife more than humans, broken glass is a danger to beachgoers. With the lack of beach rule enforcement, I do not recommend walking on the beach barefooted.

Over 6.5 hours of trash removed from South Lido. It is crazy how much trash gets littered there within a matter of days.

I have been noticing an uptick in broken glass, pill blister packs, and plastic tear-off strips from food containers.

Some of the most common items found were cigarette butts, metal bottle caps, and plastic fragments.

The items of most concern were broken glass, wood with nails sticking out, plastic bags, and discarded fishing equipment.

After only two days since my deep clean off Lido’s Ted Sperling Park, so much more trash has accumulated. While some of it had obviously washed in from the gulf/bay (especially foam fragments), a lot had been littered by beachgoers. Very disheartening, but goes to show why frequent beach cleanups are needed.

South Lido Ted Sperling Park cleanup. Over three buckets of trash collected, including a plastic recycling container found in the water by a nice citizen, and an abandoned baseboard. Lots of foam fragments, cigarette butts, metal bottle caps, and plastic wrappers. Some of the more concerning items were a hypodermic needle, fishing line/hooks, and lots of broken glass.
