Science and Environment Council Our Mission: Increase science-based environmental understanding, conservation and restoration through collaboration and public engagement.

Science and Environment Council is a coalition of science-based environmental organizations in Southwest Florida with a mission to increase environmental understanding, conservation and restoration. SEC is a leader in science and environment, influencing policy, convening discussions, and enhancing public awareness about sustainable and conservation practices based on science. As a coalition of important environmental, science and cultural organizations, SEC serves local governmental, educational, and economic agencies by utilizing the experiences and institutional knowledge of SEC members. SEC and its members create conservation and restoration models based on science and expressed through education, research and stewardship to solve local and global challenges.

Look for these two questions on the back side of your ballot at the very end. These are Sarasota County Referenda. NOT the same as the State Constitutional Amendmemts 1-3.

Sarasota County is one of Florida's fastest-growing counties. Every year, more of what makes this place special- the ranchlands, the wetlands, the forests, the wildlife- is lost to development, and once it's paved over, it's gone forever.

For more than 25 years, one voter-approved program has preserved more than 42,000 acres of Old Florida, protecting the habitats of Florida scrub-jays, West Indian manatees, bald eagles, and gopher tortoises. This November's ballot has two questions on that same program: one to continue it, one to give it the resources to act quickly, before critical land is lost.

Preserve what makes Sarasota, Sarasota.
Vote Yes & Yes on November 3rd.

✅ Yes, for continuation of the Environmentally Sensitive Lands and Parkland Program Ad Valorem Tax.

Join us for this free event — a rare chance to hear directly from the scientists and advocates studying the region’s most pressing environmental challenges, from microplastics in local waters to the loss of natural habitats, and what those changes mean for the future of the Suncoast. — April 15th starting at 3 p.m. inside the Bayfront Community Center behind the Municipal Auditorium. Presented in partnership with Suncoast Searchlight with Suncoast Waterkeeper, Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, and Gulf Coast Community Foundation

One researches dolphin pods in Sarasota Bay. Another studies the impacts of pollution in area waterways. A third leads a consortium that strives to bring awareness to the work of local scientists.
