Legal e-bikes make it easier for people of all ages, especially kids and older folks, to get around without needing a car for every trip. They give people independence, reduce traffic, and cost a lot less than a 6,000-pound vehicle.

Enforce reckless riding and illegal e-motos, starting with the people that market these as street legal. For everyone else, build safer infrastructure and let people move.

"Every person deserves to cross the street without wondering if today is the day they don't make it."

There are streets in every city where crossing is an act of faith. No crosswalk markings. No traffic control. No sight lines. Fast-moving vehicles that have no design reason to slow down. The people who cross those streets anyway - because they have no other way to get to the bus, or the store, or school - are making a daily risk calculation that no one should have to make. Pedestrian safety infrastructure is not an amenity. It's the difference between a street that asks people to take their chances and one that protects them by design. Every person. Every crossing. Every time.

The data on induced demand has been clear since the 1990s. We kept funding highway expansions anyway.

This is the part of the induced demand story that is not a technical failure. It is a political one.

The research showing that highway expansion generates traffic equivalent to new capacity over a 5-10 year period has been published and replicated for decades. Transportation agencies have been aware of it. The funding decisions kept coming anyway because highway expansion is politically popular and transit investment is politically contested.

The data does not govern funding. Political will does. And changing political will requires public understanding.

We are done asking.

"Speed tables don't ask drivers to slow down. They make it impossible not to."

A speed table is a flat-topped raised section of roadway, usually wide enough to span a crosswalk. The ramps going up and coming down provide the deflection. The flat top provides the pedestrian crossing surface.

The result: a driver who fails to slow down gets the same vertical experience as a driver who does. The road enforces the speed, not the sign.

This is what self-enforcing design looks like. No sign required. No enforcement needed. The pavement itself creates the consequence for excessive speed. Speed tables work where posted limits don't, and they work on every single vehicle that crosses them.

Maybe we should care about 16-year-olds driving F-150s as much as we do about them riding legal e-bikes.
