T.R.E.K. Foundation, Inc. works to increase literacy in Sarasota by providing
e readers and tablets to at risk youngsters. 100% of funds raised goes to the children.

Since 2012, our region has provided more than $15 million in unrestricted funding to support local nonprofit organizations during the Giving Challenge, a 24-hour online giving event presented by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. The Giving Challenge demonstrates that everyone can help make a difference.

Working with homeless and at risk children throughout my career, I observed frequently that they did not own or have access to many books. This was due to their transiency. The last thing a family thinks about when moving from home to home or shelter to shelter is books.
Too heavy. Too cumbersome.
This always bothered me, so when I was appointed to the position of Supervisor for Programs for the Homeless in New York City, I always had an endless supply of books for the children to take with them and keep. Of course, when they moved from the shelter these books were usually left behind.
This thought continued to gnaw at me when I retired to Sarasota.
One day, as I sat reading my kindle on my lanai, a bulb went off in my head: KINDLE!!
What better way to give children an endless supply of books? I shared this idea with my friend, Jonna Keller, and before I knew it T.R.E.K. Foundation, Inc. was born. Together we received 501c3 status, contacted the Sarasota School Board, the YMCA, the Boys and Girls Club and The TRIAD Alternative School and began our journey. We provide Kindles, Nooks and tablets for children at risk to read, enjoy, and if successful in school - to keep. Initially, we provide the books. Eventually, we teach them how to access free books from the library and the Internet. The joy on a child's face as s/he reads and plays word games on a high tech device is amazing. And with easy avenues to the world of reading… PRICELESS!!
Your donation to the T.R.E.K. Foundation, Inc. (Tech Readers Enrich Kids) will provide children with a window to the world of knowledge and information. Make your donation between September 20th and September 21st from noon to noon and it will be matched two to one. Thus a $25 donation will be worth $75 to T.R.E.K.

Increasing literacy through the use of ereaders and tablets

Today was a special day. We delivered our first Kindles to our kids. Books will be loaded in a few days and the kids will be on their way. How exciting!!!
