Join us as we advocate for equal pay on Black Women Equal Pay Day, August 13th. This day symbolizes the day in 2020 that Black women must work to earn what their White male counterparts earned in 2019. Please help the branch support pay equality.

Advocate and Educate
Write a letter to your local newspaper editor about Black Women Equal Pay Day. Try to include a local angle and end with a call to action. You can also create your own letter adding your personal touch and including a few noteworthy findings from the research.

Noteworthy Findings from AAUW-Sponsored Research:
"Working Black Women in Florida and Economic Insecurity:
A Story of Gender and Racial Inequality"
Mary Gatta, PhD and Jessica Horning, MSSW

• This research uses a realistic index of economic security that is based on family type and allows for some savings. It is a better benchmark than the federal poverty level.
• Black women experience the highest levels of economic insecurity in Florida, relative to other race/sex groups.
• 46% of Black full-time workers lacked economic security even though they worked full-time.
• In Florida, 66% of all Black women and half of Black full-time working women do not earn enough to reach economic security for their family type.
• 90% of Black single mothers fall below economic insecurity even though they are employed.
• Occupational segregation helps explain the pay gap. In Florida the top three occupations where Black women are concentrated are: nursing, psychiatric and home health aides; customer service representatives; and cashiers. These occupations are typically low paying with little opportunity for employment-based benefits or retirement savings.
• 70% of Florida Black women who work full-time as nursing, psychiatric and home health aides and 70% of those who work as customer service representatives are economically insecure.

Top Recommendations
• Find ways to open higher-paying careers to Black women.
• Raise the minimum wage and subminimum tipped wage in Florida.
• Provide paid leave and paid sick days to all Florida workers.

Ellen Roche and Diana Sells had a letter to the editor of Sarasota Herald Tribune published on Tuesday, May 19. It reads:

By winning the vote, women changed history
In “The true flu precedent” on May 15, Chris Doyle concluded that World War I and the Spanish flu disillusioned the country and ignited xenophobia and racism. But after a 72-year battle, women won the right to vote when Congress passed the 19th Amendment in 1919 and 36 states ratified it by 1920.

In this year of pandemic and the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the passage of this historic expansion of suffrage, historians continue to ignore the important roles that women played in our history. Women rolled bandages and sold war bonds. The 1918-19 flu limited rallies but women persevered even as their ranks were reduced by illness and the need to nurse others.
In November 1918, due to their efforts, pro-suffrage lawmakers were elected and suffrage referendums were passed in several states.

According to “The Woman’s Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote,” by Elaine Weiss, “They used all the tools of democracy and learned to use the system to change the system.” When telling the story of the Spanish flu, remember that women mattered then and now. Include them in our history.
