Are you interested in making abortion services safer and more accessible? Check out the following post (reposted from Michelle Welsh). If you are interested in patient es**rting, message us and we'll point you in the right direction!
"There will be a patient es**rt training for new volunteers this Friday at 5:00 p.m. at the Sarasota Planned Parenthood. The role of patient es**rts is to help patients feel more safe, comfortable, and supported despite the presence of protesters on our procedure days, which are every Friday. This is accomplished largely by their presence alone, as well as offering to walk patients to the door of the health center. If you are interested in being a patient es**rt, please message me your e-mail address in case I need to get in touch with you, and come to the training this Friday!
I just want to convey how important patient es**rting is. Although protesters are not allowed on our property, patients do have to pass them to enter the building. Many protesters say/yell potentially upsetting things to them, ranging from guilt tactics to straight insults. It can be very intense and hurtful for patients. For many patients, the decision to have an abortion is not an easy one, and it can feel really threatening and disheartening to encounter a group of protesters outside of the health center, many of whom are abrasively disrespecting their choice. The presence of patient es**rts helps communicate many things to patients: that there are people who support them in whatever decision they feel is best for them, that we care about our patients’ comfort and safety, that they are not alone. Since we started having patient es**rts, the protesters have reduced in number, and patients' demeanor when entering the building has changed drastically. For example, much fewer patients come in crying now.
It is always important for us to have patient es**rts every Friday. Soon, it will be even more vital as “40 Days for Life” begins in late September (ending in early November). According to their website, 40 Days for Life is the “largest internationally coordinated pro-life mobilization in history, helping local communities end the injustice of abortion.” Essentially, our numbers of protesters increase drastically, including people coming in busloads from local churches. During this time, I would really like to have more es**rts than usual, in hopes to somewhat reduce the salience of folks who do not support our patients.
Thank you for reading this, and I hope to see some of you on Friday!
P.S. If any former/current patient es**rts want to say a little somethin' about their experience es**rting, feel free (but no pressure)!"
