With reference to the comment that there is no mention of other tortured animals featured on restaurant menus, other than foie gras, it is not because they are overlooked. But we need to fight the worst of the worst first. At the very least, the animals whose lives are sacrificed for our dinner plates, deserve peaceful, kind lives and humane slaughter practices. We strive for that.

One of Sarasota's premier restaurants has committed to remove Foie Gras
from their menu. Michael's-on-East has committed to this huge and
humane decision and will no longer be featuring Foie Gras on their menu.

This great decision opens the door for Sarasota to lead the nation in becoming a foie-gras-free city, a humanitarian city that cares for its citizens and has a heart!

Some of you are wondering why the abhorrent cruelty to ducks and geese in the production of foie gras is even legal. Most people don't know that farm animals are exempt from the Animal Welfare Act. They come under the heading of animal husbandry and as such, are exempt from animal cruelty laws.

Many of you are wondering how best to help eradicate foie gras in our area. We've found the most powerful message is sent by speaking directly to owner/managers, and TELLING them you find this product cruel and unacceptable. And that you cannot in good conscience, come back if it remains on the menu. If you simply stop patronizing their restaurant, they just blame the economy on the low numbers.

Knowing of the unspeakable cruelty that takes place in order to produce foie gras, it is astonishing to find out that The Mad Crow has opened its doors and will serve duck hot dogs topped with this abhorrent product. It was formerly The Rustic Grill and not surprisingly, it is reported that the chef at Station 400 (also on the "Restaurants Serving Foie Gras" list), was instrumental in their menu planning.

Update on foie gras on menus in Sarasota, Florida:
Despite a polite letter requesting their compassion by removing foie gras from their restaurant menu, not a single restaurateur has come forward as of today (January 31st, 2011).

On January 12th 2010, our organisation sent out a letter to all restaurants listed with foie gras on their menus. Our email politely directed them to our website and in particular, to some of the petition comments we have received.
