SRQ Connects, a community- based group focused on creating a greater sense of connection and belonging in the Sarasota area, is inviting anyone who is interested to “Join the Conversation” at a World Café in April. The World Café is intended to bring participants together from all parts of the community who may not ordinarily have the chance to discover each other. “Often we don’t move beyond our
own circle or make the time to have conversations that involve listening to people deeply in order to get past superficial differences,” says Anne Ferrier, who is the cultural and linguistic competency coordinator for the Sarasota Partnership for Children’s Mental Health, which is supporting the World Café. Participants can move among conversational groups spreading and building upon ideas generated within individual circles. Last year’s Partnership project, The Observer and The Observed, found the need for more conversations and deeper questioning to bridge the cultural and social divides in our community
A date for the World Café is being finalized, and those interested may call 861-1410 or check online at www.AllAboutSarasotaKids.com to stay informed. In addition to a dialogue around key questions, the World Café will incorporate visual and performing arts as another form for participants to discover their own voice and find connection with others. A website blog and other social media tools will keep participants connected and conversations continuing after the event. With an emphasis on listening, the World Café gives everyone the opportunity to feel they have been heard. “Once we feel that our perspective has been heard and understood by others, it helps us be more open to understanding those who may have a different perspective from ours,” Ferrier said. “This is a crucial step in continuing to bring us together as a strong, vibrant community and nation.”
