Florida Gulf Coast Sisters in Crime is pleased to announce the topic for the October 3rd 10-Anniversary Celebration Event is:
“Why are Mystery Authors from 100 Years ago Popular Now?”
Presented by Aubrey Nye Hamilton.

Dress as your favorite sleuth
Come out to celebrate 10 years of our Florida Gulf Coast Chapter mystery-loving community.
Program Description: The formal duration of the Golden Age of Mystery is considered to be the period between the wars, 1918 to 1939. While the standards of the traditional mystery form endured into the 21st century, the style flourished during those years and the authors most associated with the period established their reputations then.
Many of those authors were forgotten, and their books were mostly out of print by the 1960s, but a groundswell began building to revive them early in the 21st century. But why? What do these authors have to offer the crime fiction reader of 2026? Their clothes were odd, their hairstyles even more peculiar. What is the appeal of these old stories?

Bio: Aubrey Nye Hamilton began her career as a librarian, which had its advantages, but quickly realized that access to all the newest books would not pay the rent, so she transitioned into more lucrative employment. Working in the IT industry paid the bills and allowed her to go to the occasional crime convention. She currently publishes a review of newish books on Kevin’s Corner on Mondays and older books on her own blog, Happiness Is a Book.

We’ve been celebrating our 10th anniversary this year. But sadly, we’ve lost one of our longest and most loyal members. From our very first group picture shown in the first place below, to others taken over the years, are ones that include Sarah Glenn. Her contributions to our organization have been many, from webmaster, to writing and publishing guru on panels, to board member and past president, she always led with humor and kindness. She will be sorely missed. And, we send our deepest condolences to her partner in life and in crime writing, Gwen Mayo, also a loyal member. Click on pictures for remarks.

Do you want to layer criminal activity in within your book? Add financial crime. Financial crimes cover everything from money laundering to terrorist financing. This workshop discusses how the crimes work, which US regulators are involved, and the best ways to add the information into your novel. Financial crimes are often linked to other crimes like human trafficking, or they can connect to legitimate sources like charities. The workshop will show you how the connections are made and how banks follow the money before alerting the government.

Bio: Paula Minydzak works at a bank fighting financial crime during the day. On her off-time, she writes mysteries and suspense novels, including romantic suspense. Her debut novel, The Firstborn Son, was a finalist in the NJ Romance Writers Best First Book contest in 2023. She is the President of the Pittsburgh chapter of Sisters In Crime. Preferring to base characters in her books on real people, she is often inspired by the words or deeds of those around her. She lives near her family in the Pittsburgh area with her Norwegian Elkhound, Boss.

“Partnering with Your Local Library: How to Build a Great Relationship,” presented by Renee Di Pilato, Director of Sarasota County’s Libraries and Historical Resources
Working with your local library system is one of the most effective—and often overlooked—ways to promote your writing and reach new readers. The Sarasota County Library System includes 11 branches stretching from Sarasota to Englewood, and like library systems throughout the United States, each branch offers unique programs, community connections, and opportunities for authors. The Sarasota County History Center in Osprey is an especially rich resource for writers who draw on historical research or local archives. By exploring your library system’s events, workshops, and author friendly initiatives, you can expand your visibility, build relationships with librarians, and strengthen your writing career through community engagement.

Bio: Renee Di Pilato is the Director of Sarasota County’s Libraries and Historical Resources. Prior to assuming this role, she worked for the Alexandria Library, where she held several positions, including Deputy Director. Renee began her library career in her hometown of Virginia Beach, Virginia, before receiving her graduate degree in Library and Information Studies from the Catholic University of America. She also holds a Master’s in Public Administration from George Mason University and a Ph.D. in Managerial Leadership from Simmons University. Renee teaches as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Southern California and is always delighted to speak about libraries and their positive impact on our community.

The Florida Gulf Coast Sisters in Crime Chapter is pleased to announce that the May 2, 2026, meeting will be “Let’s Write Short: A Panel Discussion on Writing Short Stories,” featuring Julieanna Blackwell, Mark Mathes, Michael L. Joy, and Jenny Ramaley.

“Let’s Write Short: A Panel Discussion on Writing Short Stories” brings together accomplished authors, educators, and an editor to explore the art and craft of short fiction. From idea generation to structure, voice, and impact within a limited word count, this lively conversation will help you think sharper and write tighter.
