The Community Foundation of Sarasota County has a new CEO. Jessica Muroff and her team visited the Leonard Reid House during a 2-hour tour of Overtown and Newtown.

This stop takes a bit more time because there’s a lot to say about the Reid family, and their 100-year old house, especially when there are exotic tea blends, tea cakes and great art everywhere.

I closed my eyes to enjoy the togetherness and singing as we headed across the Ringling bridge to Lido Beach.

Thanks Brock!
Your legacy will forever inspire!

You magnificently, lovingly and unselfishly shared your time, talents and treasures with SAACC stakeholders and guests. The gatherings you hosted brought people together for fellowship, food and laughter at the historic Leonard Reid House.

After joining the SAACC board, your commitment was unwavering. Action! You moved with intention and jumped in with us to open the Reid House. The expertise you gleaned in brand development and product launch helped greatly. Everything you did, from negotiating agreements, contacting other philanthropists, introducing us to them, to influencing policymakers, and engaging with decision-makers moved SAACC forward.

Budgets, governance, strategic planning, innovative problem-solving, marketing, staffing, and ex*****on, your fingerprints are all over SAACC. Profound was your impact.

Thanks for your prayers before board meetings. Prayers carried us through mountains and valleys.

Thanks for embracing us and Black arts, culture and history.

Our hearts bowed when the news arrived (obit in comments). May prayers of peace envelop Julie, your children, and the family dog, who was always close to you. We ❤️ you, Brock.

Stop by the Reid House.
Leave us your story about attending the little kindergarten in Newtown.

We are alums of the Newtown Day Nursery aka Helen Payne Day Nursery aka Children First. Mrs. Ethel Reid Hayes taught us the alphabets, how to count, read, sit right in our chairs, stand in a straight line for the restroom without wiggling, and lie on our mats quietly for naps after lunch.

We ran around the gated playground laughing like crazy, tagging each other, playing hide and seek, singing “Miss Mary Mack,” sliding, swinging and jumping off and there was a see-saw.

Lifelong friendships formed that exist today. We’re honoring Leonard Reid’s wife Eddye and daughters Ethel and Viola who made lunch for generations of Newtown kids when our parents went to work. Unforgettable memories shared today at a tea in their honor. We have something special. Stop by the Reid house. Leave us your story.

The students came to learn. The teachers showed up at OLLI. Brief class synopsis:

Countless Black women braved dangerous terrain with courage, dignity, and determination to gain freedom, education, and access for oppressed people. The roll call, numerous — Phyllis Wheatly, Harriett Tubman, Mary McCleod Bethune…

Newtown women were at the forefront of Sarasota's battle for Black rights. Josie Washington, Mary Emma Jones, Betty Jean Johnson, Emma E. Booker, Gwendolyn Atkins, Elease Suarez, and Dorothye Smith. Our roll call of Black women leaders is long.

A multimedia presentation was icing.

There’s a piano at the Reid House thanks to a donor.

Music lessons coming up! Musician Dennis Clove has traveled the world playing piano, and bass for over 40 years.

He’d like to teach students (any age) who have a passion to play. Meet him at the house.

You’ll need an instrument for practice at home.
Ask about his teaching method.
