On Sunday night, rode into Sacramento after covering the entire Pony Express route, close to 2,000 miles across eight states, in 6 days, 21 hours and 15 minutes. That’s nearly 20 hours faster than the horseback riders who set the record 160 years ago.
When he got there, the first people he thanked were his crew. “They’re what enables me to do something like this.”
A few weeks earlier at The Big Lost (formerly Rebecca’s Private Idaho), we asked Lachlan what athletes like bring to the cycling community. His answer started with something simple: “They make it richer.”
Cycling brings together people who might live completely different lives, have different experiences, and otherwise may never find themselves in the same place. But then you get on a bike together and, as Lachlan put it:
“We’re all just bike riders.”
“We’re all dressed in funny tight clothes, even though we’re all doing completely different things with our lives.”
He’s one of the most accomplished riders in the sport. Whether he’s crossing the American West or lining up at a gravel race in Idaho, he keeps pointing back to the people riding beside him. For Lachlan, having athletes like Christian alongside him adds another perspective to this community and another chance to understand someone whose life might look different from his own.
A bike can be a pretty simple thing, but the people you meet because of it, the miles you share together, and what you learn from each other along the way can make it something much bigger.
