🇺🇸 Mission Accomplished: UPSTATE OUTBREAK 2026 Was an Unforgettable Success! 🇺🇸

A massive thank you to everyone who stepped onto the battlefield this past weekend for UPSTATE OUTBREAK 2026! Presented by Homeward Bound Adirondacks and A.P.E. Ai***ft, the weekend was packed with high-intensity, immersive ai***ft action, strategy, and epic faction battles. From surviving zombie outbreaks to tactical squad missions, you all brought incredible energy and teamwork to the field!

Take a look at some of the highlights from the weekend—from locking down objectives to swapping stories and gear around the campfire.

Most importantly, this event directly supported our mission at Homeward Bound Adirondacks. Every registration, battle, and moment of camaraderie helps us continue providing vital outdoor recreation, peer support, and crisis outreach programs to help veterans find hope beyond trauma.

We are incredibly grateful for our veteran community, our dedicated players, and everyone who came out.

Homeward Bound Adirondacks invites veterans to join us for a three-day retreat surrounded by 105 acres of Adirondack beauty at Camp Tamarack, home of the SGT Carlton A. Clark Veterans Center. This retreat is an opportunity to step away from the demands of everyday life, spend time in nature, and connect with fellow veterans in a welcoming and supportive environment.

🏕️ Retreat Accommodations
This retreat will feature large canvas tent accommodations, embracing the beauty of simplicity, nature, and community. (Heaters will be provided!) Participants should be comfortable with shared living arrangements.

NOTE: Veterans are also welcome to bring their own personal tents.

This past Saturday, Homeward Bound Adirondacks proudly participated in the North Country Out of the Darkness Community Walk at the Olympic Oval in Lake Placid. Our team walked around Mirror Lake to show our ongoing support for su***de awareness and prevention. It was an inspiring day filled with community spirit, meaningful conversation, and shared camaraderie. Thank you to everyone who stood with us!

🔥 Another exciting update from Camp Tamarack! 🔥
The covered firepit has a roof and it has been stained!
A huge heartfelt thank-you to James and Angie Terry for their outstanding work building and preparing our covered firepit for the October retreat. They even went the extra mile by adding a matching covered woodshed to keep firewood dry and ready to use! As Angie Terry would say, 💪 "HBA Strong!" 👊

Remembering Chad William Hargarten
January 7, 1985 – September 2, 2026

Our hearts are with Eric Hargarten Sr. and his family as they mourn the loss of his brother, Chad, who died by su***de. Chad served our country for 20 years in the United States Air Force, with numerous deployments.

Eric is a cherished part of the Homeward Bound Adirondacks family. During our retreats at Camp Dudley and in Onchiota, he was a quiet, dependable presence—the first to arrive, gathering firewood, setting up equipment, and building the fires that brought us together. He loved camping and the peace of the Adirondacks.

Although Eric moved to Hawaii to be closer to family, his connection to HBA remains strong. Our Executive Director, Valerie Ainsworth, treasures the visit she shared with Eric and his beloved service dog, Nadia, two years ago. We hope to welcome him back to the Adirondacks and share our property with him one day.

In the midst of his grief, Eric has asked us to share a message: check on your fellow veterans, stay connected, and reach out for support when you are struggling.

In Eric’s words:
“I implore anyone who is struggling or having thoughts of harming yourself, please reach out to loved ones or the VA su***de prevention hotline and seek help.”

Please take a moment to call a fellow veteran, send a message, or make time to listen. If you are hurting, you deserve care and support. You do not have to face it alone.

Homeward Bound Adirondacks is seeking a compassionate, organized, and dependable Case Manager to join our SSG Fox Su***de Prevention Program. Veterans are strongly encouraged to apply!

📍 Hybrid position based in the Albany area
💼 Full-time | $60,000 per year
💙 Health insurance, paid time off, and a flexible schedule

You’ll work directly with Veterans to reduce isolation, build meaningful connections, and help them access the services and support they need. Responsibilities include outreach, home and community visits, case management, su***de prevention screenings, transportation coordination, and connections to VA services, community resources, and HBA’s Adirondack wilderness retreats.

Regular travel is required throughout the Albany area and North Country, including Saranac Lake and Malone. A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.

🎒🌲 Mission Completed! 🌲🎒
From Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon, Homeward Bound Adirondacks explored the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness with an exceptional group of veterans. Together, we backpacked more than 15 miles, enjoying favorable weather, remarkable Adirondack scenery, and the camaraderie of time spent on the trail.

Alongside the physical challenge of carrying a pack and covering the miles, trips like this create space to step away from daily demands. Time on the trail offers room to breathe, reflect, connect with fellow veterans, and simply enjoy being present in the outdoors. Each mile provides another opportunity to appreciate our surroundings and the people walking beside us.

The scenery was remarkable, but it was the veterans who made this weekend special. We are grateful to everyone who joined us and helped make our time in the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness such an enjoyable experience. 💚
