Meet Lauren Whitehead, our fourth guest faculty leading this year’s High School Writing Retreat.

Lauren Whitehead is a writer, performer and dramaturg. She writes in several forms including poetry, nonfiction, adaptations and drama. Her poems have been published online and in print magazines including POETRY, Apogee Journal and Winter Tangerine, as well as in selected anthologies such as Break Beat Poets, Vol. 2: Black Girl Magic and What Things Cost, the first major anthology of labor writing in nearly a century.

Run by teens from around the North Country, the Teens Speak Out Loud! podcast is about social and environmental issues that are important to them and that they think are important for the Adirondack region. These podcasters invite experts to join them for intergenerational conversations about the issues that face our local teens today.

In episode 2, “Who is Peat?”, ACW teens Ellie, Evan, and Keely talk to expert Steve Langdon about peat bogs. What are they? Why are they important? What can we learn from them?

Meet Jon Sands, one of the four guest faculty leading this year’s High School Writing Retreat.

Jon Sands is a winner of the National Poetry Series, selected for his second poetry collection, It’s Not Magic (Beacon Press). He is the founder of the Emotional Historians workshop, a series of generative writing classes with well over 1500 registrants to date. His work has been featured in The New York Times, published in The Rumpus, The Millions, The Journal, The Brooklyn Rail, The Poetry Foundation, and many others, as well as anthologized in The Best American Poetry. He is a curator for SupaDupaFresh, a monthly reading series at Cheryl’s Global Soul in Brooklyn, and has received residencies and fellowships from the Blue Mountain Center, the Brooklyn Arts Council, the Jerome Foundation, and the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses.

Space is limited! Register today for ACW’s 2026 High School Writing Retreat.

This October, the Adirondack Center for Writing will present the 22nd annual High School Writing Retreat at Paul Smith’s College. Register early to ensure your space, it will be first-come first-served. Make sure you register separately for each day if you plan on attending both days.

Thursday Oct 29 & Friday Oct 30, 9 AM to 3 PM each day
In-person at Paul Smith’s College (7777 NY-30, Paul Smiths, NY 12970)
FREE (Students must bring their own lunch, or money to eat in the cafeteria)

Register for one or two days of writing workshops, epic performances, new friends and fellow writers, and a meet & greet with our guest writers. It's a unique and impactful experience to include on college applications. Open to any high school students and classes, including homeschool students. No experience necessary, and no fee to attend.

Students will enjoy performances and learn to supercharge their writing with literary rockstar instructors: Noah Arhm Choi, Denice Frohman, Jon Sands, and Lauren Whitehead.

Looking for your next favorite nature writer?

Join us at ACW on Thursday, October 15 for a special reading and conversation with beloved nature author Alison Hawthorne Deming.

Alison Hawthorne Deming is author of six poetry collections and five nonfiction books. Her work centers on relationships between nature and culture, art and science. Her most recent books are: Blue Flax and Yellow Mustard Flower (Red Hen Press 2025) and A Woven World: On Fashion, Fishermen, and the Sardine Dress (Counterpoint Press 2021). Her first book Science and Other Poems was selected by Gerald Stern for the Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets.

Deming will read from her poetry collection The Gift of Animals (with a foreword by Robin Kimmerer) as well other poetry and nonfiction. A book signing will follow.

You may remember Denice Frohman from our 2024 Kickass Writers Festival. We're so excited to welcome her back as part of our 2026 High School Writing Retreat faculty.

Frohman is a poet and performer from New York City. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, Poem-A-Day (The Academy of American Poets), The BreakBeat Poets: LatiNext, Nepantla: An Anthology for Q***r Poets of Color, The Rumpus and elsewhere. A former Women of the World Poetry Slam Champion, she’s featured on hundreds of stages from The Apollo to The White House. Currently, in addition to performing poetry, she is touring her one-woman show, Esto No Tiene Nombre, which centers the oral histories of Latina le***an elders. She lives in Philadelphia.

Frohman will be one of the four guest faculty leading this year’s High School Writing Retreat, but you can catch her at ACW on Thursday, October 29 at ACW for Poetry On Broadway.

This workshop will feature discussions about broader strategy as well as very practical and specific tips about taking advantage of free resources to publicize your book.

Noah Arhm Choi is the author of CUT TO BLOOM, the winner of the 2019 Write Bloody Prize. They received a MFA in Poetry from Sarah Lawrence College and their work appears in Apogee, The Rumpus, Split this Rock, and elsewhere. Noah was nominated for Best of the Net in 2022, shortlisted for the Poetry International Prize, and received the 2021 Ellen Conroy Kennedy Poetry Prize, alongside fellowships from Kundiman, theSewanee Writers’ Conference, and the Adirondack Center for Writing. A Lambda Literary Writer in Schools, they have worked as an educator in New YorkCity since 2013, and currently work as an Equity Senior Program Associate at NYU Metro Center.

Noah will be one of the four guest faculty leading this year’s High School Writing Retreat, but you can catch them at ACW on Thursday, October 29 at ACW for Poetry On Broadway.
