Next week, just a couple spots left!

Join Carla Stockton, author of memoir “Too Much of Nothing: Notes on Feminism, Identity, and Womanhood” for a writing workshop centered around Carla Stockton’s book.

Sept 9 & 10
6:30 - 8:30 PM
via Zoom
$20-$40 pay what you can

This two-session intensive workshop invites participants to explore the intersections of womanhood, identity, and personal history. Inspired by Stockton’s Too Much of Nothing, which traces the arc of her life through vignettes of her mother’s history, her own marriage and academic endeavors. In this workshop, writers will examine how larger historical, cultural, and domestic forces shape their stories.

Participants will leave with drafted vignettes and a deeper understanding of how to mine their lives for compelling creative nonfiction.

Hello from ACW’s New Program Director, Erin Reilly.

I am a recent graduate of the Creative Writing MFA program at Emerson College, where I specialized in fiction and taught four semesters of First Year Writing. Before earning my Master’s degree, I spent two years working and writing in New York City. As an undergraduate, I studied film and television production and earned my Bachelor’s in Communication from St. John Fisher University in Rochester, New York.

Ever since I discovered the arts of writing and storytelling, I have sought out every opportunity possible to share those arts, and my passion for them, with others. I have worn many hats over the years, such as editor-in-chief, managing editor, associate producer, professor, and most importantly, student. Being on both sides of the classroom has allowed me to develop an understanding of what it means to find and own your voice. I have found this to be a lesson best learned with a strong community at your side, and I am drawn to this very aspect of Adirondack Center for Writing. I feel pulled, also, toward the jam-packed calendar of programming already in action at ACW, and I am incredibly excited to join in on this work.

Anyone who knows me personally knows that my two greatest loves are writing and the Adirondacks. I grew up going to my grandma’s camp in Inlet, running around Eagle Bay and Old Forge with my cousins, reading The Adirondack Kids book series, and skiing at Gore Mountain. I am the most myself, and the most inspired, when I am among the trees and loons and people that reside in the Adirondacks. I feel as though I’ve waited just long enough to bring these two loves together, and I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to do so at ACW, in Saranac Lake, and beyond.

Erin starts this week and we’re really excited! Leave a comment or stop by ACW to welcome her to the ACW fam.

This summer at ACW's writing camp our teen writers created a literary journal titled,"Eleven Writers in Search of a Title." Each teen wrote either a poem or a story (or sometimes both) and contributed a piece of artwork for this beautiful publication. Many of the teens returned to ACW the following week to sell the journal at Saranac Lake's Artwalk. It was amazing to hear them talk to so many strangers about their work, their table was constantly surrounded by fans.

We've seen so many of these young camp writers grow over the years both personally and as writers. This coming year, for the first time, some of them will be old enough to attend ACW's High School Writing Retreat, and we cannot wait to see them there.

Another new Howl Story Slam Venue!

Join us in Speculator this Thursday, August 27, at 7 PM at Lemon Tree Brewery.

The theme is “What’s My Line?” Stories of lines crossed, being on the right or wrong side, lifelines, standing in line, line in the sand, lines in a performance, or any kind of line. So, what’s your line? Sign up and take the stage to tell a true story in under 5 minutes. Judges (2-3 audience members) score the stories, and at the end of the night, a winner is announced. All winners are invited to our annual Grand Slam at the end of the year.

More upcoming Howls include: Potsdam, Saranac Lake, and Tupper Lake. See all of our upcoming slams at adirondackcenterforwriting.org/events

The Howl Story Slam team is a partnership between Adirondack Center for Writing and North Country Public Radio, two organizations that believe in the power of stories.

Don't miss this week’s open mic at ACW

Join us this Wednesday, August 19, for an open mic. Local author Bethany Adams will kick it off with a reading from her book, Unsupported. After, anyone is invited to share up to 5 min of their own writing.

Register for free: https://adirondackcenterforwriting.org/event/unsupported-with-bethany-adams-open-mic/

Unsupported follows Bethany Adams (contributor to Blood Sweat Tears) and her hiking partner, Katie Rhodes on their record-setting thru-hike of the Adirondack 46 High Peaks. Adams and Rhodes face the challenges of the trail head-on, and with each other’s constant companionship, buoyed by their fierce desire to prove just what women can do in the mountains. Through her time on trail, Adams is forced to reckon with the dissolution of her marriage, and what it means to be supported in life, love, and adventure.

Teens from our Summer Lit Camp took their creativity to a whole new level last week. Guided by local author Rebecca Donnelly, these young writers collaborated to design and layout an original literary journal, "11 Writers in Search of a Title," filled with their own pieces of fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and visual art.

Come out this Thursday from 5 to 7:30 PM in downtown Saranac Lake to meet this year’s writers and grab a copy of the journal. Children’s book author Brian Heinz will also be selling books at the ArtWalk. We can’t wait to see you then.
