When Nina Graham started a Project Outreach chapter at Sipsey Valley Middle School, she wanted to see her students' lives changed through these intentional relationships. But yesterday was a little more personal when her little boy brought home his first acceptance letter. Nina has worked tirelessly for the students and teachers in Tuscaloosa County School System for many years. However, as she shared with me, our families often don't really grasp the work we do as teachers, but today she celebreated her son's joy and the fruit of her and many others' labor.

Tuscaloosa County Schools will start this year with at least 12 Project Outreach chapters and are full of excitement after many of them took part in the first-ever MERGE Conference in Tuscaloosa this summer.

For many of us, like Nina, Project Outreach means so much more because it has changed our lives and so many others for the better!

Nina, we are so thankful for you, and hope your mama heart can keep smiling today like the smile your son came home with yesterday!

In October and November, Project Outreach chapters across Alabama will host the Week of Change, a disability awareness emphasis week at our school.

Our goal is to bring disability awareness, acceptance, and understanding to the forefront for students from kindergarten to college.

Our theme this year is "Look Again," a phrase we feel will support our mission and could be a great tool for all of society.

We are quick to judge, condemn, and make opinions about many things we do not understand. So we are asking our students, teachers, and faculty to do one simple thing.

Look Again

See a person, not a behavior. See the heart, not the action. See the possibility, not the inability. And when you feel like you have tried everything, Look Again! You might just see how true change is really possible!

Earlier today, Elizabeth Von Hofe, Alabama State Teacher of the Year and Project Outreach Spanish Fort Elementary Sponsor, shared her heart and passion for Project Outreach with all the state special education coordinators.

We are so proud of all her hard work and support for her passion and purpose. We hope every school system will consider bringing Project Outreach to their district, schools, and classrooms to make radical inclusion part of every Alabama community and beyond!

Project Outreach isn't trying to create school service clubs.

We are trying to change the culture for students with disabilities and their friends.

The movement is real, and we hope that you will consider being a part of it.

As college students head back to school, we want to wish them the best of luck.

Many students who graduate and leave Project Outreach want to continue the work of disability awareness, acceptance, and understanding in their careers.

Here are a few who have decided to keep being Difference Makers and advocating for their friends.
