COMMON CORE ALERT:
CALL TODAY MARCH 28, 2016!>>>>>
There is an important decision to be made by the Legislature on Monday that will concern the future of our children’s education.
We have learned to “trust BUT VERIFY” when it comes to state government. Let me try to simplify what has become a complicated issue. Below is a simple timeline of facts.
• FACT ONE: In 2014, the Parents of Oklahoma students were heard and our Legislature repealed Common Core. However, the STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION WAS NOT HAPPY. IN FACT THEY WERE SO INTENT ON KEEPING COMMON CORE THEY SUED THE LEGISLATURE!
• FACT TWO: The State Board of Education was given two years to set new standards, and sought out experts from other states including English expert Dr. Sandra Stotsky from Massachusetts and Mathematics expert Dr. Lawrence Gray from Minnesota, both nationally recognized for developing some of the highest quality standards in the nation, which were also non-common core compliant. Currently, neither expert approves of the proposed standards as written. If our standards don't get the seal of approval from the experts whom our Department of Education solicited, then it seems quite obvious they should not be passed, as is.
• FACT THREE: The charge given to our State Board of Education was to develop educational standards that were non common core compliant as well as high quality...but they have failed! Trust has been broken and the new standards will simply prepare students to take a Common Core aligned ACT Aspire assessment (tests) series which will, in turn, encourage Common Core curricula usage once again. The SDE’s own expert "reviewer", Dr. Sandra Stotsky, says the current standards usher back in Common Core.
o On March 20th, 2016, the Oklahoma Department of Education's expert reviewer Dr. Stotsky wrote to Inside Sources News stating, "My comments on the OSDE proposed standards have been reported in all major newspapers. These proposed standards were created to be Common Core-compliant in the sense that they allow ACT's Aspire tests to be used in Oklahoma."
o ACT Aspire is not to be confused with the ACT College Entrance Exam that most perceive as safe. However, if we use ACT, then we will have to use ACT Aspire which is the only ACT product which tests grades 3-10. ACT Aspire admits to being Common Core aligned in their own “fast facts” section.
• FACT FOUR: A bill was put forth this past week to go ahead and pass the standards as they are with the understanding made by the Oklahoma State Board of Education that they will make the corrections requested by the Legislature…but that bill will not fix the problem.
ACTION: Trust, but verify!
Step One: Email!
Copy and paste the following email to the Legislature with the following request.
Subject: Monday- Modify HJR-1070 & SJR-75
Dear Sir or Madam,
The legislature has the responsibility as our fiduciaries to know what the final standards are before voting to approve them. As written, the current bills, HRJ1070 and SJR75, do NOT correct the problem – they MUST BE AMENDED. Do not approve an unfinished product with the “hope” that “changes” will be made. Trust is broken and we know that board members have promised that they will NOT accept additional changes to the standards, so it is up to you as our elected representative, to DIRECT that Changes will be made – so that you keep your word to the parents, students and educators of Oklahoma that you would ensure high quality standards that are not common core compliant when you passed HB3399 into law. Insist that the suggested corrections made by subject matter experts in the SCCC Report be implemented. AFTER you have seen that the external reviewers changes have been made, THEN approve the standards.
HJR 1070 and SJR75, as currently drafted and before you DO NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. YOU MUST AMEND THEM.
If you choose to do nothing on Monday, then you will be acting through your silence.
Sincerely,
