Three years training with .

That time has translated directly into stronger deployments, cleaner searches, clearer communication between handler and K9, and more consistent outcomes in the field. and ’s training has tightened our fundamentals and built reliability we can count on when it matters.

The result is a more capable, more confident unit overall. Grateful for the work they’ve put into our unit.

Today we honor K9 Riko, a loyal partner and dedicated member of the Santa Rosa Police Department K9 Unit.

Partnered with Officer Paetzold in October of 2014, Riko served the City of Santa Rosa with unwavering dedication for 8 years. Over the course of his career, he was instrumental in the seizure of over 50 pounds of narcotics, $250,000 in asset forfeiture, and more than 100 safe surrenders of dangerous suspects.

Beyond enforcement, Riko made a lasting impact through his connection with the public, participating in over 150 community demonstrations alongside his handler. Those moments helped bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community, showcasing the discipline, trust, and partnership behind every K9 team.

Riko retired in July of 2022 and spent his well-earned retirement with his handler and best friend, Officer Paetzhold, trading deployments for Kong toys and quiet days at home.

We stand with Officer Paetzold as he says goodbye to his partner and friend. Thank you for your service and sacrifice, Riko. Your impact will not be forgotten.

End of watch.

K9 Ghost assists in the safe surrender of a suspect wanted for multiple fi****ms related charges.

On Thursday, April 16, 2026, at approximately 12:30 p.m., SRPD Officers assigned to the Special Enforcement Team (SET) along with several SRPD Detectives and a K9 Officer served a search warrant in the 1800 block of Willow Pass Road in Concord, as well as the 200 Block of Macbeth Court in Vacaville. The search warrant was related to an ongoing investigation regarding illegal weapons possession and sales occurring throughout Sonoma County and Santa Rosa. The sales were of “Invisiglock” switch devices which had been offered for sale in Santa Rosa. An “Invisiglock” switch device converts a G***k style firearm into a fully automatic weapon which is prohibited by California law. Contacted and detained during the warrant service was 19-year-old Vacaville resident Enzo Lafrades.

During the contact, Lafrades attempted to flee into a nearby vehicle. A K9 announcement was made, which caused Lafrades to immediately exit the vehicle and surrender peacefully and without incident. A search of the vehicle was conducted and officers discovered he had discarded a loaded, concealed 9mm G***k model 26 which was equipped with an “Invisiglock” switch.

A search of Lafrades’s vehicle revealed four additional “Invisiglock” switch devices concealed within a First Aid container in the center console, each individually packaged for sale.

During a search of Lafrades’s residence, the officers located a .40 caliber G***k which was equipped with an “Invisiglock” switch, several “Invisiglock” switch parts, and a traditional G***k switch. They also located a fully automatic U*i and a fully automatic Tech 9. Both fi****ms are classified as machineguns under California law.

Lafrades was arrested and booked into the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility on the following felony charges:

This is an example of how a K9’s presence can deescalate a potentially violent interaction and create a peaceful surrender.
