October is Polio Awareness Month for Rotary International, and October 24th is World Polio Day. Our District is bringing all clubs together to do a Relay for Polio that will start in Crescent City October 1 and end in Petaluma on October 24th. All clubs are involved, and we want all Rotarians to participate in and support this event.

Each club is participating in their own unique way. The 4 Santa Rosa clubs will group together and walk from the SRJC to Courthouse Square to the SMART train on Sunday October 18 starting at 1pm. We will carry a torch, banners and flags and be as visible as possible.

Thank you to Caryn Shapiro Stone, Development Director of Women’s Recovery Services (WRS), for joining Santa Rosa Sunrise Rotary on September 10 and sharing the difference WRS makes for women and their children.

Since 1975, this Sonoma County nonprofit has supported women facing substance use disorders. By allowing children to stay with their mothers during residential treatment and welcoming women who are pregnant, WRS removes a major barrier to seeking help. Its programs provide compassionate care, transitional housing, and continued support as women rebuild their lives.

Sunrise Rotary has been a longstanding partner of WRS, contributing $48,938 since January 2014, along with countless volunteer hours. Led by Leroy Carlenzoli, our members have helped maintain and beautify the organization’s campus and transitional homes, creating welcoming spaces for women and their families.

We’re proud to continue this partnership. Thank you, Caryn and the WRS team, for your dedication to our community!

Our guest speaker this week was Letitia Hanke. Her story of overcoming adversity was so inspiring to our club. She is a female entrepreneur, community leader, and nonprofit founder with 30 years in the roofing industry. A small-town girl from Lake County, Letitia originally dreamed of a career in music and studied Music and Performing Arts at Sonoma State University. When an opportunity opened in the roofing industry, she stepped in, managed a prominent roofing company for eight years, and in 2004 founded ARS Roofing & Gutters.

Driven by a passion to create opportunities for others, Letitia founded The LIME Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, in 2015. (LIME is the reverse spelling of her son's name, Emil.) Through programs such as the NextGen Trades Academy, NextGen Auto Academy, Turner Arts Initiative, and senior wellness activities, the foundation empowers underserved youth and seniors through workforce development, music and arts, health and wellness, and life-skills education.

Unite for Good and Make a Lasting Impact

Sunrise Rotarian Eloise Tweeten recently travelled to Mexico on a District 5130 Friendship tour to meet with other Rotarians and assess partnership opportunities amongst clubs and districts.

Maternal and childhood health was an identified area of focus and grant proposals written to reduce infant mortality and increase prenatal care. The Mexican Institute of Social Security and Rotary partners have created a comprehensive program for sustainable education, progress monitoring and intervention.

Where do each of us fit into the plan? This is an International collaborative approach, and the grant proposal total of $12,031 has pledges for all but $2000. Closing the gap is open to everyone, members of a Rotary Club or not. Clubs in Sebastopol, Valley of the Moon and Santa Rosa Sunrise and Windsor are current contributors along with Clubs in Tepic and Nayarit Mexico.

Big check for a great cause! Last Thursday, our club presented a check for $14,000 to Marsha Lucien, Executive Director of the Family Justice Center of Sonoma County to support FJC's Camp Hope program.

Each year, the FJC sends two groups of campers (ages 7-11 and 12-17) to a sleep-away camp in Northern California. Camp HOPE America is the leading year-round camping and mentoring program in the country for children and teens impacted by domestic violence. Camp HOPE is focused on creating hope, healing-centered pathways, and life skills through collaborative, trauma-informed care for youth exposed to trauma to believe in themselves, their dreams, and in others.

We were honored to welcome Lisa G. Carreño, President & CEO of United Way of the W**e Country, along with members of her team, to speak with our Rotary club.

A big part of Lisa’s presentation focused on 211, an important community resource that helps connect people with local services and support when they need it most. It was a great reminder of just how many resources are available in our community—and how important it is that people know where to turn for help.

Thank you, Lisa and team, for joining us, sharing your knowledge, and for all you do to strengthen and support our Sonoma County community!

Fun hike in Trione-Andel SP to Lake Ilsanjo Saturday morning. Shout outs to Dan, Lori, and Brian for knowing all the trails. Great scenery and conversation. Nice way to start thew weekend. Anyone is welcome to join Sunrise Rotary hikes and walks.

Here's to 'in-c***rs' who volunteered at the apple c***r at the Gravenstein Apple Fair to benefit Farm Trails. This photo was from Sunday with Sunrise Rotarians, Peter Treleaven and Max Childs. Penny Millar served on Saturday. Attendees were very happy to sample and purchase full pours of delicious apple c***r!
