When it comes to preparing for an emergency and a possible evacuation, the first step is to know what zone you’re in. The more familiar you are with your evacuation zone, the faster you can react and evacuate in the case of an emergency. Socoemergency has great, easy tools for you to find your zone and look at the surrounding zones as well.

PARTNER HIGHLIGHTS - For this week, out two main partners and inspirations are The National Weather Service and CAL FIRE. The National Weather Service is constantly monitoring wildfires and weather that increases risk of wildfires, therefore this agency issues red flag warnings when conditions have become severe. Check out the fire weather section under the forecast tab on their website, as well as a constantly updating map where you can put in your zip code for a detailed weather update.

CAL FIRE is a continued partner, collaborator, and inspiration to Fire Safe Sonoma. The practical tips we’ve been sharing this week are inspired by the “One Less Spark, One Less Wildfire” campaign. Check out their website with abundant resources and knowledge from the experts!

It’s easy to spark a fire when driving, but also easy to check your vehicle and follow these practical guidelines to reduce the wildfire risk.

Make sure nothing is dragging on the ground, especially any chains when towing.

Check your tire pressure to make sure you’re not driving on exposed rims, which can throw sparks.

Don’t drive or park your vehicle on dry grass or brush - hot exhaust pipes and mufflers can ignite fires.

Stay tuned for more tips this week, and for week four we’ll be covering emergency preparedness and evacuations.

As we enter the third week of Wildfire Preparedness month, we wanted to share some practical tips and information that are relevant to our day-to-day lives. A frequently asked question, especially for folks new to the area, is what are red flag warnings? It’s a warning that there is critical fire danger over the next 24 hours following the announcement. When your area has a red flag warning, practice caution and stay up to date on your evacuation zone and route (more educational materials to come).
