Did you know that it is illegal in many states and counties for local governments to pass laws protection their environment? In fact, The Clean Waterways Act, just signed into law in Florida, “denies citizens any rights regarding the natural world, such as the right to clean water.” Speak Up Wekiva, another Rights of Mother Earth org, is currently bringing the Florida gov. to court to bring the constitutionality of this new legislation into question.

Thank you to all who shared space with us at our Tending the Wild screening and talking circle event last night. In case you missed the event, here's the recording. We'll be doing another event for RoME's Summer Series next month. There will be more details to come so stay tuned....

Okay, okay, a sneak peak for the topic of August's Summer Series: We're thinking ... FIRE. Cultural burning, to be specific. With the first red flag warning of the year in Sonoma County already behind us, fire is officially on our collective radar. Let's learn how we can better support and live with a land that is not only fire-adapted, but fire-dependent.

Thank you to for uplifting these perspectives: “Sometimes there's a lot of momentum around what happens with Black men. But we need to be careful not to forget Black women,” says Danielle Belleny, a co-organizer of the Black Birders Week and wildlife biologist. “Lines, personally, for me, blur between what it's like being a Black person experiencing racism and then also experiencing sexism on top of that.” Read more:

"Indigenous peoples' inherent identification with their place presents some of the most elegant alternative paradigms for practicing the “art” of relationship to the natural world. Indigenous peoples have consistently attempted to maintain a harmonious relationship with their lands in the face of tremendous pressures to assimilate." Because 7 Generations Starts NOW

Everything humans have done over the course of the past seven generations – good and bad – has led us to exactly where we are today. This moment is critical, because it is in this moment that we set our collective trajectory for the next seven generations. Partnered with the global Rights of Mother Earth movement, Rights of Mother Earth SoCo is the local chapter of the Rights of Nature campaign. We believe in the power of the collective to create change on the local level. The actions we take now ripple outward and are capable of shifting the stale cultural paradigms that have long sickened our society and damaged our relationship with the Earth that sustains us.
