This week, two stories made headlines for very different reasons — but they're the same story.

Today, the headline broke that the owner of an NFL team was arrested in Ohio after responding to an undercover ad and arranging to pay for s*x. He was caught in a sting run by their Human Trafficking Task Force. Around the same time, closer to home, Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety — working with Santa Rosa PD and the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office — arrested two men in a demand-reduction operation targeting people trying to buy s*x. One of the men had been arrested for this before. This wasn't his first time.

We're not sharing this to gawk. We're sharing it because the public reaction tells us we still have work to do.

A lot of the commentary on the NFL arrest has been "he has millions of dollars, why would he need to pay for it" or calling the woman he arranged to meet a "hoe." Both miss what's actually happening.

Our own experience — training responders and working directly with survivors — lines up with what the research on buyers consistently shows: the average buyer is a middle-aged man, often married, often financially comfortable.

Many say what they're paying for is something a partner won't do, or that it's simply easier than the effort of building a real relationship. Money buys access without the vulnerability of intimacy. That's the power dynamic — not desperation, not lack of options.

And calling the women involved a "hoe" erases what's actually happening to them. Many people in the s*x trade are there through coercion, violence, or circumstances they didn't choose. Reducing someone's exploitation to a slur is part of why this demand keeps getting excused instead of confronted.

That's also why we target demand. When someone pays for s*x — and especially when the person they're paying is being trafficked — that transaction isn't a victimless exchange. It's an act of s*xual assault against someone who often has no real ability to say no.

Operations like the ones in Ohio and Rohnert Park exist because law enforcement is recognizing that the people creating the demand are as responsible for this industry as the people profiting from it.

The Rohnert Park case makes another point worth sitting with: this wasn't a one-time lapse in judgment for one of the men arrested — it was a repeat arrest for the same behavior. These stings don't catch people making a single bad decision. They catch a pattern that was already there, and just happened to finally get caught.

These operations are becoming more common around the country precisely because demand-side enforcement works. But headlines fade fast, and the conversation usually stops at jokes and judgment instead of asking why this keeps happening and what it costs the people on the other side of the transaction.

Redemption House of the Bay Area exists to combat human trafficking through education and survivor support. If this is still raising questions for you, we want to keep having that conversation.
