Calling all ! Check out our May safety article from AFW Safety Officer Alexi Stavropoulos where he discusses the FAA’s five hazardous attitudes, the “hero trap” that volunteer pilots may experience, and how they should be addressed when making decisions during a mission.

“The FAA’s five hazardous attitudes — anti-authority, impulsivity, invulnerability, macho, and resignation — are familiar to every trained pilot. They’re taught early, tested often, and easy to recite,” says Alexi.

“Yet in the real world, they rarely present themselves in obvious ways. Instead, they emerge subtly, often disguised as confidence, urgency, or even compassion. In philanthropic flying, they can become especially difficult to recognize.”

We’re excited to introduce Michelle Duong-Rosas as Angel Flight West’s New Senior Development Manager!

Michelle is an operations and program management professional with experience across the nonprofit and higher education sectors. Most recently, she served as Operations Manager at the USC Marshall School of Business, supporting the Lloyd Greif Center for Entrepreneurial Studies and the Brittingham Social Enterprise Lab.

Michelle earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Social Behavior from the University of California, Irvine, and her Master of Social Work with a concentration in Social Change and Innovation from the University of Southern California.

In her free time, Michelle can be found hunting down the perfect matcha latte with her husband, followed closely by cuddles with her corgi, Archie.

We're deeply grateful for the patient navigators at Fred Hutch and Fred Hutch Survivorship Program who request and coordinate flights through AFW to ensure their patients have access to the care they need. It was an honor and privilege to present them with AFW's Community Partnership Award! 🩵🛩️

Yoel and other wonderful patient navigators at the Pathways to Health Symposium last week. They were awarded the Angel Flight West award for their partnership with Angel Flight West in supporting patients with medical transportation needs.

Angel Flight West is pleased to announce the expansion of our volunteer pilot network in Alaska and introduce Tom Kleeman as the inaugural Alaska Wing Leader!

For many years, our work in Alaska has centered on missions supported through the generosity of our partners at Alaska Airlines. This expansion marks an important next step as we grow our presence and deepen our commitment to serving communities across the state through both our volunteer pilot network and Alaska Airlines’ continued support.

Tom previously flew missions for Angel Flight of New England and brings both experience and passion to this new leadership role.

Of his new position, Tom shared, "I am excited to bring this mission to a place where it is not only valuable but essential, and to work with fellow pilots, medical partners, and communities to ensure that Alaskans facing medical hardship have a reliable pathway to the care they need."

Command Pilot Lisa Pierson of our Wyoming Wing was recently spotlighted in an article published by Jackson Hole News&Guide.

Of accessing medical care in Wyoming, Lisa shared with reporter Jeannette B***r, “In rural communities, getting care isn’t always simple.”

Many of our passengers are based in rural areas which can make it difficult for them to access specific or specialized care for a diagnosis. Volunteer pilots like Lisa are a lifeline for those living in communities that are far away from larger healthcare facilities that are equipped with the resources they need.

When we asked Lisa why other pilots should consider volunteering with AFW, she stated, “It’s easily the most rewarding thing I have done in flying, which is saying a lot because I have had a very gratifying flying career.”
