LA County Public Works is exploring ways to support new development while making everyday travel easier and more sustainable.

Its Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) Mitigation Program Report will evaluate a potential program allowing eligible developments to address the additional driving they generate by investing in improvements that reduce driving countywide, including expanded transit, safer bike networks, and complete streets.

For people who bike, this is a chance to speak up for safe, connected bikeways that make everyday trips easier. Share your travel habits and priorities to help shape the program.

On Saturday, October 17, the City of Santa Monica will unveil the Draft Illustrative Master Plan for our Great Park at the airport site. This long-awaited, more detailed Phase 4 plan builds on the Phase 3B Draft Framework and the community engagement that followed, showing how the future park will take shape.

The Draft Illustrative Master Plan will show how the future park will be organized and how people will move through it. Perspective drawings will bring key views to life so community members can picture themselves standing in the park. You’ll be able to explore the plan as a colorful, giant floor map, walk through the community’s vision for an all-park future, and share what you’d like to see included or protected as the plan moves forward.

Your voice and presence matter. Bring your family, invite your neighbors, and help demonstrate strong community support for making the Great Park a reality. The imbalance is striking when you consider the environmental, social, and space impact. Bike It! Walk It! Bus It! Week is held to encourage Santa Monica families to forgo driving in favor of eco-friendly modes of transportation, like walking, biking, or taking transit to school. Big Blue Bus is celebrating Bike It, Walk It, Bus It by giving Santa Monica K-12 students FREE RIDES, beginning October 5, 2026, through October 9, 2026.

There are two (2) easy ways K-12 students attending school in Santa Monica can ride Big Blue Bus for free during Bike It! Walk It! Bus It! Week:

1. Use Your GoPass TAP Card

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) participates in Metro’s GoPass Program. With GoPass, students can ride free on Metro, Big Blue Bus, and 11 other participating transit agencies in LA County at any time, including during Bike It! Walk It! Bus It! Week.

Are you attending an SMMUSD school but not yet participating in the GoPass Program? Contact your school administrator to get your free GoPass TAP card. For more details, visit: metro.net/gopass.

2. Show Your Valid School ID to the Operator

Show your valid school ID to the Big Blue Bus Operator when boarding, and your ride is free during Bike It! Walk It! Bus It! Week. Don’t have a school ID? We’ll also accept a current report card, class schedule, or an official letter from your school verifying enrollment.
