NRDC - Los Angeles

NRDC - Los Angeles NRDC's Southern California office is a state-of-the-art showcase for green building design. All of its wood is from forests certified as sustainably managed.

NRDC Los Angeles is composed of more than fifty staff at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) who work on environmental issues in Los Angeles and the greater Southern California region. We transformed a 1920s structure in a busy pedestrian center to take advantage of mass transit and other public services. Our building uses 60-75 percent less energy and 60 percent less water than a convent

ional office of the same size. The building's technologies and materials-- from it's water-recycling system and solar panels, to its environmentally friendly paints-- are widely available and cost effective for residential and commercial builders alike. The US Green Building Council has awarded the building a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum 2 rating, recognizing the highest possible achievement in sustainable design. Our building is named for actor, director, and NRDC trustee Robert Redford. Free tours of the building are available by appointment. Please call 310-434-2300 to reserve a tour space.

NRDC's Linda Escalante was interviewed on Telemundo on how wildfires in the West are causing poor air quality in New York, and how disasters like this will continue unless we reverse the effects of climate change. Linda warned how, “Every summer, we’ll see more and more of these conditions in the East,” and added, “We must reduce our reliance on fossil fuels that are further accelerating climate change.”

NRDC's Kate Poole was featured in NBC-Bay Area on how climate change is affecting struggling salmon populations in California and how the state compounds the problem by diverting the water salmon rely on. Kate warned, “Climate change has really thrown a significant new challenge to all of us who work on these issues. And just like it’s threatening home for all of us, it’s also threatening home for the animal and plant life that we depend on to survive.” She also noted, “What we need to do if we want to provide enough space for our salmon and steelhead and other native species to survive is get rid of a lot of barriers that we’ve built, a lot of defunct dams we have in California. We have over 1,400 dams in California! Many of them don’t serve any useful purpose anymore and are just old and nonfunctional.”

Salmon have struggled in California because the state has diverted so many of the streams they swim up to spawn. Now climate change is creating a new challenge – it’s diminishing the snowpack that feeds those waterways. Kate Poole, an attorney who fights to protect and restore freshwater ecosyst...

NRDC's Andrea Collins was featured in KCRW’s Greater LA episode of Wasted, focused on California’s food waste crisis. The episode explores how much of California grown produce is actually eaten, by following the lifecycle of a strawberry. Andrea noted, “In the U.S. and in North America, more food is wasted at the household level than at any other point in the supply chain.” When asked how grocery stores contribute to waste, Andrea said, “There are places where grocery stores are overstocking and giving the impression of abundance that’s leading to waste, like a tall mound of apples. Apples on the bottom are getting bruised and damaged.”

With every strawberry that doesn’t get eaten comes the wasted water to grow it, the wasted gas to transport it, the methane it emits while it rots, and crowded landfills.

NRDC's Ed Osann was featured in KCRW’s Greater LA series called “Wasted,” on the solutions to society’s waste problems. This episode highlights Santa Monica’s new City Hall Building which fertilizes plants with human p**p from its toilets, and in case you’re wondering, it doesn’t smell!

Santa Monica’s new City Hall East structure uses “foam-flush” toilets that turn human waste into nutrient-rich compost for the garden on site.

Today, as we “Imagine a Day without Water,” we recognize that for many this is less an exercise than it is a reality. For farmers, families, and communities of color, a day with water–water that is clean, water that is accessible, and water that is affordable–can be much harder to picture.

It's !! Los Angeles is known for its iconic waterways that include beautiful beaches and swimming holes, and our concrete river. But, every day, an estimated 100 million gallons of runoff contaminated with various pollutants flows through L.A.’s massive storm drain system to foul our rivers, creeks and, ultimately, our coastal waters.
