The Railyard Art Committee seeks self-funded public art and performance projects for temporary instal

The Railyard Art Committee (RAC) invites both individuals and creative teams to propose visual and performing art projects that are vital, lively and experimental for temporary installation within the Railyard Park + Plaza. RAC will select thoughtful, playful art in the context of social, cultural expression and environmental sustainability. Such issues may include – but are not limited – cultural heritage, site history, ecological restoration, and the building of a sustainable future. Most importantly, projects should emphasize community enjoyment, engagement and participation. The Railyard Park + Plaza was designed as a Cohesive Urban Art Environment and is a work of art in itself. RAC encourages a continuation of the collaborative spirit that remains at it’s core. Joint efforts across disciplines — artists, designers, scientists, historians, hydrologists, and many more — will be welcomed interactions with the original design. All applications for installations, artworks and performances of a temporary nature that comply with the usage policies of the Railyard Park + Plaza are welcome.

It’s never too early to start thinking about summer! We’re excited to present Life’s a Picnic!, a vibrant, large-scale mural currently gracing one of the Railyard Park’s community buildings. Created by Santa Fe-based art collective Abstract Picnic, the piece is meant to celebrate the playful, natural joy and communal spirit of the American picnic. 📣 Call for Committee Members: Railyard Art Project

The Railyard Park Conservancy is seeking community members to join the Railyard Art Project Committee, an all-volunteer group of artists, curators, educators, and arts advocates who bring temporary public art exhibitions to the Railyard Park + Plaza each year.

Committee members attend monthly meetings, help review and select art projects, and support events and promotion for current exhibitions.

Jonathan Hertzel's Abstract Random Photo Booth

Friday May 24-Santa Fe Railyard Shade Structure by Farmers Market, 5–8 pm

Saturday May 25-Santa Fe Children's Museum 1050 Old Pecos Trail, 11am–3pm

Sunday May 26-Santa Fe Railyard Shade Structure by Farmers Market, 10am–3pm

The Abstract Random Photo Booth is an immersive painting created by the exuberant expressionist artist Jonathan Hertzel. Hertzel has worked with a variety of mediums including monumental bronze sculpture, painting, clay, paper, and ink. Currently, he will feature his new large-scale paintings with visual accessories that allow the audience to become participants in the artwork. Two new paintings will be debuted on Memorial Day weekend with Axle Contemporary. The interior of the “Photo Booth” will be wrapped with a 6-foot by 18-foot painting titled A Day at the Beach while the exterior will have an 8-foot by 18-foot painting titled The Next Wave mounted on it. The public is welcome to model parts of the painting in the form of painted coats, hats, and shirts.. The artist and participants will photograph unique portraits as the artwork comes alive when you step through the frame in the Abstract Random Photo Booth!

The Railyard Park Conservancy’s Railyard Art Project is proud to present Activating Oga Po’ogeh Land Acknowledgement, a multimedia installation by Kathleen Wall (Jemez Pueblo/White Earth Chippewa) on exhibit through August 31st along the Santa Fe Rail Trail near Nuckolls Brewing Company (1611 Alcaldesa Street). Meet the artist at our opening celebration from 7:15pm-8:45pm on Friday, May 31st.

Constructed with metal frames and concrete ears of corn, the piece is brought to life through video installations of community members walking across Oga Po’ogeh. Wall’s goal for the project is to construct “conditions for people to encounter land acknowledgment communally. The work takes the land acknowledgment to the land itself — outdoors in a public space.”

Support for this project comes from the City of Santa Fe Arts & Culture Commission, the Institute of American Indian Arts’ Social Engagement Residency Program, and the Santa Fe Railyard Community Corporation

Michelle Korte and Lena Weiss of Herstory Printmaking Collective talk with Matthew about their Women of The Rails project which they’ll be pasting up in the Santa Fe Railyard on April 20th, as part of the Railyard Art Project. They elucidate some of the history and personalities involved with railroads in America from the mid 1800s to the present.

The deadline for the Railyard Art Project's (RAP) Call for Artists is just a week away! Be sure to get your art proposals in by Friday, November 24th to be considered for temporary installation in Santa Fe's Railyard Park + Plaza in 2024. Each of the two projects selected will receive a $1,000 honorarium, as well as marketing support and liability insurance.
