What does it mean to build fundraising practices that are grounded in equity, reciprocity, and community power?

Facilitated by Marisa Page, our next Fundraisers' Forum explores the concept of decolonizing fundraising and how nonprofits can move beyond transactional models toward approaches that center relationships, shared values, and mutual accountability.

Join us on June 18 for a thoughtful conversation about fundraising practices that align with your organization's mission and community.

New Mexico faces one of the most severe healthcare worker shortages in the country, and the consequences are felt deeply by local communities. On the latest episode of Community Matters, Santa Fe Community Foundation President & CEO Christopher Goett sat down with Fred Nathan, Executive Director of Think New Mexico, to discuss what’s driving the shortage, what the research reveals about long-term solutions, and which reforms gained traction during the 2026 legislative session.

In New Mexico, 1 in 7 children loses a sibling or parent before age 18 — the highest rate of childhood bereavement in the country. The latest feature in our editorial series with Table Magazine spotlights Gerard's House, which has met this reality for nearly three decades. The Santa Fe nonprofit supports children and families navigating grief through through free, bilingual peer groups, individual sessions, crisis response, and programs like Nuestra Jornada for families with immigrant roots from Mexico and Central America.

"My heart fills when I see kids learning how to support themselves with tools they'll use over a lifetime," says Executive Director Nicole Maes-Gonzales, who has led the organization for eight years and been part of it since its founding in 1997.

"I didn't realize how much I needed a space like this until I was in it." That's one participant on Wisdom Weavers, our two-year cohort designed by and for women of color leading nonprofits across northern New Mexico.

Now in its second year, Wisdom Weavers brings together 22 executive directors, program managers, and fundraisers, weaving together three threads: professional development, healing-centered practice, and the cultural and ancestral wisdom these leaders already carry.

Nonprofit teams carry some of our region's most vital work — clean drinking water, housing, education, and care for youth, elders, and LGBTQ+ neighbors.Caring for the people who care for our communities is part of the work, not separate from it. How do you build a thriving team when there's no HR department to lean on?

For executive directors leading rural New Mexico nonprofits, people management often falls to one person — without dedicated human resources staff, a big budget, or peers who have navigated the same challenges.

Join us Thursday, May 21 for our next Executive Director Learning Circle: Staff Leadership, Retention & Difficult Conversations. Presenters Marsie Silvestro and Sarah Silva will lead a discussion on staff retention, coaching and feedback, performance accountability, and building resilient teams.

What does it take to grow the next generation of community leaders?

For the New Mexico Acequia Association, the answer runs through the acequias themselves — the centuries-old irrigation systems that have shaped land, water, and community life across northern New Mexico.

Through the Acequia Culture Youth Leadership Institute, the Youth Policy Internship, and classroom presentations, the New Mexico Acequia Association invites young people to learn from their local acequias and the people who steward them. Students build real skills in policy, advocacy, and cultural knowledge, and step into leadership roles already rooted in place.
