Truchas Chapter Trout Unlimited

Truchas Chapter Trout Unlimited Truchas Chapter of Trout Unlimited (Chapter 718) was formed in 1998 and has about 500 members. The Chapter carries out its work entirely with volunteers.

Trout Unlimited, a national organization of over 150,000 members, is dedicated to conserving, protecting and restoring North America's coldwater fisheries and their watersheds. Its vision is to ensure that robust populations of native and wild coldwater fish once again thrive within their North American range, so that our children can enjoy healthy fisheries in their home waters. Truchas Chapter w

orks to carry out TU's vision in the waters of northern New Mexico through our conservation projects and youth programs, through our fund-raising efforts, and through our communications and advocacy efforts. Through our conservation projects, the Chapter seeks to secure the remaining populations of native Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout and to restore that trout to more of its historical waters. Truchas Chapter also seeks to improve the condition of the watersheds in northern New Mexico through habitat improvement projects, river clean-ups, and advocacy. Through our youth programs, the Chapter seeks to instill knowledge about and a strong connection with our rivers and the wildlife that inhabits them, so future generations will desire to protect these rivers and their wildlife. Truchas Chapter forms partnerships wherever possible with state and federal wildlife and public lands agencies, with schools, and with non-governmental organizations. We are a 501(c)(3) organization, and contributions to Truchas Chapter are tax-deductible.

Run. Fish. Save native trout.

This July, Truchas Chapter will be represented at the 2nd Annual Vermejo Park Flyathlon — a conservation-minded race that combines trail running, fly fishing, and fundraising for Rio Grande cutthroat trout conservation in New Mexico.

Our chapter runner, Patrick Iverson, will be competing on behalf of Truchas in a friendly fundraising competition among TU runners from across the state. The goal is simple: raise meaningful dollars for native trout, healthy watersheds, and cold, clean, connected streams.

A sincere thank you to everyone who has already donated. Every gift helps, and a lot of small donations can add up quickly.

That’s a wrap on another great Trout in the Classroom season!

This year, Truchas worked with a record 16 local schools across Santa Fe, Las Vegas, Los Alamos and Pecos, helping students raise trout in classroom tanks and release them into approved New Mexico waters.

Along the way, students visited Lisboa Springs Hatchery, explored macroinvertebrates, learned about clean water and native trout, and made a direct connection with the watersheds we work to protect.

A huge thank you to Mike Jozwiakowski, Dave Gregorio, and the 15 Truchas members and friends who contributed more than 200 volunteer hours over the final six weeks of the program.

This is conservation education in action.

Volunteers needed!

Truchas Chapter is looking for a few extra hands at the Village of Pecos Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 6, at Monastery Lake.

We’ll be hosting a hands-on macroinvertebrate station for kids and families — a fun way to connect young anglers with aquatic insects, trout habitat, and healthy waters.

Volunteer time is 6 a.m. to noon. No special expertise needed, just a willingness to help and engage with the community.

Help Truchas win this one.

Patrick is representing Truchas TU in the Vermejo Park Flyathlon, raising money for Rio Grande cutthroat trout conservation in New Mexico.

The race falls on his birthday weekend, and he’s dedicating it to his late father, who gave him his love of fly fishing.

Less stuff. More trout. Healthier streams. Let’s show up big for native trout and help Patrick bring home the fundraising bragging rights.

High in the Jemez Mountains, a stream less than a foot wide is holding something remarkable: a resilient population of native Rio Grande cutthroat trout.

In this guest article, Daniel Gibson reports from the remote Rito Chihuahueños drainage, where Trout Unlimited volunteers are restoring stream and wet meadow habitat one willow cutting and one log structure at a time. The early signs are promising: sediment is being trapped, water is being held longer on the landscape, and trout are finding refuge in the repaired habitat.

It’s hard, backcountry work — and it’s paying off.

Congratulations to Robin Hickerson, this year’s recipient of the Truchas Chapter of Trout Unlimited’s $2,500 STEM scholarship!

Robin, a senior at Mandela International Magnet School, has shown a remarkable commitment to conservation, community service, and rural New Mexico. From caring for 20 Rio Grande cutthroat trout through Trout in the Classroom to pursuing nursing and biology at UNM, her story is a powerful reminder that healthy waters, healthy landscapes, and healthy communities are deeply connected.

We’re proud to support students like Robin who are already making a difference — and who will help shape the future of conservation and community care in New Mexico.
