In 2024, “temporary” workers at the NHCC were stripped of their annual and sick leave benefits, which push them to fight for inclusion in the CWA Local 7076 collective bargaining agreement. They won at the labor board, and the labor board has directed their employer to give them benefits afforded under the collective bargaining agreement. The boss is appealing this decision to District Court and will not recognize the labor board’s decision in the meantime. Join us at this rally to urge them to drop their appeal and recognize the workers’ union immediately.
The NHCC is a state run facility under the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) with workers who run a welcome center, museum, and performing arts program. DCA workers, including at the NHCC, have been covered by the collective bargaining agreement with CWA Local 7076 since 2004. However, “temporary” workers have historically been excluded from the union due to their temporary status. In practice, these workers are not temporary. Their contracts get renewed year after year. One of the current workers has been in her position for over 20 years, getting fired at the end of each year long contract and being re-hired after a one day break in service. This worker has had a full career at the NHCC with no retirement benefits to show for it.
NHCC “temporary” workers miss out on pay increases from the legislature, healthcare and retirement benefits, and just cause protections. These are all benefits that their DCA colleagues enjoy, including those who do the same work at other DCA divisions.
