In this classroom at Colegio Horizontes, big things are happening!

The Coffee Trust provides scholarships for students in Chajul, Guatemala to access education, learn about health and nutrition, and develop life skills.

We believe that the communities we work with already have the vision; we just share the resources to bring it to life.

To be a part of a student’s path toward excelencia, visit thecoffeetrust.org/donate today.

Fair Trade is more than just a label on a bag. It’s a commitment to the people who make your morning cup possible.

In regions like San Gaspar Chajul, it ensures that the skilled work of farming can sustain the families who dedicate their lives to it. It means a fair price that actually covers the cost of production, recognizing that hand-picking cherries and sorting beans is a craft that deserves a stable living.

When you choose fair trade, you’re partnering with the people behind the process.

Strong leadership doesn’t happen in a vacuum; it’s grown through connection.

In 2021, The Coffee Trust brought together the shores of Lake Atitlán and the mountains of Chajul.

Veteran leaders of Asociación Chajulense de Mujeres Unidas por la Vida shared wisdom and strategy with women in San Juan la Laguna. Groups like Mujeres Trabajadoras have grown out of this partnership, cultivating a network of self-sustaining communities.

When indigenous women share their expertise, the whole region rises.

In Guatemala, students spend time in learning and building the skills they need for the future.
Access to education allows children to keep growing and continue their studies, creating new opportunities for themselves and their communities.
Behind each student are families working every day to support their path forward.
When you choose to support businesses connected to these communities, you help make this possible.
We’re proud to stand alongside communities in Guatemala through Every Bean Counts®.

From the nursery to the warehouse, every bag in these photos represents years of patient work and precision. It takes three years for a new plant to yield its first harvest, and then the beans must be hand-plucked one by one at the exact moment they ripen.

After being washed, fermented, and dried, the coffee rests here in 100-lb sacks called quintales. There are still several steps to go before this coffee is graded as “Oro,” or gold, and ready for its journey to roasters around the world.

At The Coffee Trust, we work with farmers in San Gaspar Chajul, Guatemala to refine agricultural practices and strengthen crops against extreme weather and crop diseases like coffee leaf rust.

Pictured here are Bill and Paula of The Coffee Trust team, with Roumaldo Perez, General Manager of Asociación Chajulense.

Quality is crafted long before the roast. After the coffee has been grown, cared for, and harvested, hand-sorting coffee beans is a skilled, essential step.

This is the final stage after harvesting, de-pulping, washing, fermenting, and drying the cherries: grading, sorting, and removing any defects. Farmers get one last chance to pick out any defective coffee beans. Only the finest quality coffee is selected for export.

At The Coffee Trust, we know that the strength of the coffee industry lies in the hands of the people who sustain it. We invest in the people behind the process, making sure that the families who grow our coffee have the resources they need to thrive.

Members of The Coffee Trust team recently visited Pueblo a Pueblo, a group devoted to improving health, education, and sustainable livelihoods in Santiago Atítilan in Guatemala.

By promoting maternal and infant health, access to education from kindergarten through higher education, and entrepreneurship for youth and families, Pueblo a Pueblo helps cultivate independence and self-reliance in coffee farming communities.

At The Coffee Trust, we share these values. We partner with coffee farmers and their communities in their efforts to diversify their income, improve their agricultural practices, and raise healthy families.

Pueblo a Pueblo: Village to village, people to people.

In Guatemala, local organizations play an essential role in supporting farmers and strengthening their communities.
Here, members of Asociación Chajulense represent the work being done to connect producers with new opportunities and markets.
By supporting these community-led efforts, we help create stronger, more resilient futures from within.
We’re proud to stand alongside communities in Guatemala through Every Bean Counts®.

“If impact isn’t built on trust and long-term relationships, it won’t last. We’re supporting community-driven initiatives, and we’re strengthening what they are already building.”

Our Executive Director, Bill Fishbein, shared this quote in a recent CoffeeTalk Magazine feature, and it says everything about how we approach our work.

We’re not here to lead from the outside. We’re here to partner, listen, and build alongside coffee farming communities.

In Asociación Chajulense de Mujeres Unidos por la Vida and Cooperativa de Mujeres Unidos por la Vida, women are coming together to sign their loan agreements and commit to shared responsibility.

Women’s microcredit and savings groups like ACMUV and COMUVI play an important role in the Guatemalan coffee farming communities that we work with.

Through these groups, women support one another, invest in small businesses, and build more stable futures for their families.

This work is rooted in trust. And most importantly, the groups are led by the community, for the community.
