While the assessment focuses geographically on the north central region, this report reveals interconnected challenges—spanning infrastructure deficits and service gaps—that exist in every corner of New Mexico.

Boaters launch onto the Chama for familiar reasons: the cool pull of the current, the sweep of canyon walls, and the chance to spend a day immersed in one of New Mexico’s treasured landscapes. This season, however, some participants will carry one more item alongside their paddles and dry bags—a water-sampling kit. At designated points along the river, participating boaters will collect sample pairs of water and macroinvertebrates while they are already out enjoying the Rio Chama.

For participating boaters, the task is modest. For New Mexico Wilderness Alliance, a current Mexico Community Foundation grantee, the combined observations can add practical, place-based information to years of water-quality and aquatic-insect monitoring along the river’s wild and scenic reach.

Last month, community members, local leaders, and housing experts from across New Mexico gathered for the 100% Guadalupe Housing Summit to explore solutions that help ensure Guadalupe County residents have access to safe, affordable housing. The summit featured presentations on rural housing challenges and opportunities, statewide housing resources, and strategies for local planning and implementation. It also opened with powerful reflections from New Mexico Poet Laureate Manuel Gonzalez, who reminded participants that "everyone deserves a safe place to live."

The summit is part of the broader work of 100% Guadalupe, a collaborative initiative focused on ensuring that all children, students, and families in Guadalupe County can access the ten vital services needed to thrive.

With grant support from the Anchorum Community Health Fund, a donor advised fund held at NMCF, the initiative has hired a community navigator, expanded efforts to address transportation barriers, launched community conversations around healthy food access, and convened this important housing summit.

At NMCF, we're proud to steward charitable investments that help rural communities identify local solutions and build healthier, more resilient futures. By bringing residents, nonprofits, local governments, and other stakeholders together, Guadalupe County is demonstrating the power of community-led change.
