📚🏳️‍🌈 LGBTQ+ History Month: Patricia Highsmith

Patricia Highsmith (1921–1995) was an American novelist best known for The Talented Mr. Ripley and her psychological thrillers exploring identity, obsession, and the darker sides of human nature.

A le***an writer, Highsmith challenged conventions through her work, including The Price of Salt (later published as Carol), a groundbreaking novel about a romance between two women that offered a rare, hopeful ending for LGBTQ+ characters at the time.

Highsmith also has a connection to New Mexico: she spent time in Santa Fe while working on The Talented Mr. Ripley in the 1950s.

Her literary legacy continues to influence LGBTQ+ storytelling and psychological fiction today. 🌈

🌈 Santa Fe’s LGBTQ+ history is part of our history. Come hear the stories that helped shape our community!

Join the New Mexico History Museum and the Human Rights Alliance on Sunday, October 25, for a powerful panel discussion exploring Santa Fe’s LGBTQ+ community in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Hear firsthand stories of resilience, the HIV/AIDS crisis, local LGBTQ+ culture, early activism, and the people who helped pave the way for Santa Fe’s first Pride in 1988 and the founding of HRA in 1993.

🎙️ Moderated by author and historian Garrett Peck, the panel features eight community members who lived, organized, created, and made history.

🎨🏳️‍🌈 LGBTQ+ History Month: Marsden Hartley

Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) was an influential American modernist painter whose work helped shape modern art in the United States. His life and relationships with men have also made him a figure of interest in LGBTQ+ art history.

In 1918–1919, Hartley spent approximately a year and a half in the Southwest, including time in Taos and Santa Fe. New Mexico's landscapes, light, and cultural traditions inspired a series of paintings that he continued creating long after he left the state.

His story is one example of the many ways LGBTQ+ artists have contributed to American art and culture. 🌈

At the Human Rights Alliance, we recognize that the fight for human rights must include Indigenous sovereignty, dignity, and self-determination. We also acknowledge the ongoing impacts of colonization and the importance of listening to and uplifting Indigenous voices.

Today is an opportunity to learn, reflect, celebrate, and recommit ourselves to building a more just and inclusive world.

Behavioral Health Group Sessions

The Human Rights Alliance's Pride Center offers a variety of free behavioral health group sessions facilitated by a licensed clinical social worker (M.S.W., L.C.S.W.). These groups provide a safe, affirming, and supportive environment where participants can explore shared experiences, build coping skills, foster connection, and promote emotional well-being.

While these groups are facilitated by a licensed mental health professional and incorporate therapeutic principles, they are not a substitute for individual psychotherapy, crisis intervention, or ongoing mental health treatment. Participants who require individualized clinical care or are experiencing a mental health crisis will be provided with appropriate referrals to community-based behavioral health providers and emergency resources as needed.

Participation in these groups is voluntary. While we make every effort to provide a confidential and supportive environment, we cannot guarantee confidentiality among group participants. Participants are asked to respect others' privacy and refrain from sharing personal information discussed during group sessions.

Andrea Gibson (1975–2025) was an acclaimed q***r poet, spoken-word artist, and activist whose powerful words explored love, gender identity, mental health, and what it means to be human. As a prominent nonbinary voice, Andrea used poetry to challenge expectations, inspire connection, and remind people they weren’t alone.

Their words continue to inspire people to embrace authenticity, lead with compassion, and celebrate the beauty of being yourself. 💜
