Attorneys: If you're troubled by the cruelty of our immigration detention system, there's a concrete way you, yes YOU! can help.
The ACLU's Habeas Corpus Project and the New Mexico Immigration Law Center urgently need volunteer attorneys from throughout the country to file Habeas Corpus petitions on behalf of non-citizens detained in New Mexico immigration facilities, many of whom are from other states. For me personally, this is becoming the most meaningful volunteer work of my legal career because Habeus Corpus petitions can be successful and people are being returned to their communities.
Be prepared: The work can be emotionally difficult and your client's story may be hard to hear. You will learn, firsthand and not from distant media reports, about the cruelty and callousness they have endured. The flagrant disregard for due process is shocking. And you may come to realize that, at this moment in time, you and your legal skills are vital.
You'll receive training, templates, interpreters, strategic support, and whatever else you need when you are matched with a detained client. Meetings with your client can be virtual, telephonic, or in person. (Be prepared to exercise extreme patience when trying to make an appointment to meet your client in a detention center.) Guidance is provided as you draft and file the Petition.
Requirements: Active law license in any state and willingness to register to practice in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico. Immigration law experience not necessary. (I couldn't write Habeas Corpus without a spell check when I signed up.)

Why do this? Because helping one person might not change the horrific universe that has trapped so many, but it could change the world for your client.
