Wise Fool New Mexico Wise Fool is a beloved and award-winning non-profit organization and social circus at the center of Santa Fe’s community arts scene.

2025 UPDATE: Wise Fool has lost their long-time studio space off Siler Rd. We are currently operating as a "traveling circus" while we seek a new home by bringing our award-winning youth programs into partner organizations through local collaboration. Wise Fool is a beloved and award-winning non-profit organization at the center of Santa Fe's community arts scene. Our mission is to ignite imaginat

ion, build community, and promote social justice through performances and hands-on experiences in the arts of circus, puppetry, and theatre. We serve 2,000 youth and adults with hands-on activities and 14,000 audience members annually with high-quality experiences built upon our core values of community, arts accessibility, and social justice. Our name honors the court jester or "wise fool," who in European medieval times was able to address controversial matters to the king and those in power without fear of retribution, as wise fools would often draw upon disarming spectacle and humor to do so. Over the past two decades, Wise Fool New Mexico has been utilizing this "back door" approach to opening dialogue in otherwise touchy situations in the creation of productions about social issues such as censorship, water rights and land use, domestic violence, immigration and borders. As a pioneer in the emerging North American social circus movement and the only contemporary circus arts company in New Mexico, Wise Fool is further evolving circus as an art form by developing quality productions, professional artists, and expert teachers for circus-based arts curriculums. Encouraging audiences to jump the bounds of possibility and recognize that we are all capable of the extraordinary, we offer first-hand explorations and skill-building experiences in which participants discover and develop their own connection to the arts.

As summer is heating up and folks are headed outside, we can’t help but think back to this past spring’s show, Entrapping Our Abundance, and its message about cherishing the gifts of our natural spaces in the Southwest.

We're excited to be hosting Dancing Earth for two workshops in the coming days!

THE BODY AS COMPASS | Saturday June 6 @ 9am
Diasporic Body Mapping, Somatic Care & Wayfinding with Humlåo Evans

The body is a living archive of story, memory, and survival. In this eco-somatic workshop, Humlåo Evans invites participants to explore the body as both landscape and vessel — drawing from CHamoru cultural philosophy, somatic care practices, and the traditions of ocean navigation and wayfinding. No experience needed. All movers, artists, healers, and community members welcome.

ELEMENTS OF DANCING EARTH | Monday June 8 @ 9am
A Masterclass in the Foundational Movement of Dancing Earth with Rulan Tangen

With Earth as body and body as Earth, Dancing Earth's Founding Artistic Director Rulan Tangen offers a movement experience for all beings. From gentle to dynamic, this eco-somatic masterclass weaves breath, sound, land-based forms drawn from rocks, wind, water, seeds, plants, and the four-leggeds and winged ones — into a collective rhythmic pulse and a language beyond words. This is Movement for All. Movement as Medicine. No prior experience required. Self-guided modifications available for all abilities.

Get ready to explore the human condition and the fundamentals of relationship via the mask of the red nose.

In this upcoming workshop with Sarah-Jane Moody, you'll play with breath, stillness, entering and exiting the stage, comedic timing, improv, stage presence, moving through time and space, duos/trios/ensemble work, finding the joy, saying yes to the game, success/failure, and so much more.

No experience necessary and all levels welcome.

Happening Sunday, June 14 from 11 am - 3 pm.

Sarah-Jane Moody has worked with Wise Fool since 1996, with a focus and passion for teaching and performing theatrical red nose clown. She is a graduate of the Dell’ Arte International School of Physical Theatre, and has taught and performed clown and physical theatre around the world. SJ is also a musician and writes/sings/plays/performs with her current music project called Sun Valley.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve continued making progress on our flooring renovation project while preparing for upcoming programs and events in the new space this summer ☀️As we continue fundraising, operational support remains equally important.

While renovations are highly visible (and exciting!) - our everyday expenses are what keep us running week-to-week.

A generous donor has pledged to work some circus magic this season - they are MATCHING every donation to Wise Fool dollar-for-dollar.
🧚‍♀️ Your $25 becomes $50
🧙 Your $100 becomes $200
👯‍♂️ Your support goes twice as far!

Help us build long-term stability in our new home while doubling your impact, and allowing us to unlock the full potential of matching funds. Donate now:

Happening tomorrow @ 2!

Come celebrate the launch of long-time Wise Fool coach Alex Diaz's new book, Camp Big Top! Pick up a copy for your middle schooler signed by the author herself. There will be Circus Try-Out Zones for Aerial Silks and Stilt-Walking for ALL AGES.

Unknown to some, when Alex is not telling you to "T" while doing the diaper drop, or encouraging you to let go of her hand while on stilts, she is an award-winning children's book author (THE ONLY ROAD and SANTIAGO'S ROAD HOME) published by Simon & Schuster.

Now, her two worlds have collided with the release of her upcoming middle grade book about... CIRCUS CAMP!

"A sweet and tidy friendship story that will make readers want to join this inclusive circus family." -Kirkus Reviews

"[A] bighearted novel [...] against a unique, high-flying backdrop." -Publisher's Weekly

"A quirky, emotionally complex read." -Booklist

We hope to see you tomorrow to celebrate this exciting accomplishment with Coach Alex!

⚠️ Studio closure update ⚠️

The crew needs a little more time to finish up the first layer of our new floors, so we will remain closed for the *full day* tomorrow, May 28, to ensure there is enough time to complete the floors and clean up. Classes and Cirque Atelier will resume as normal on Friday, May 29.

We apologize for any inconvenience, and will be issuing makeup passes for those pre-registered for tomorrow's classes. (And we know these studio improvements will be worth it!)
