The Santa Fe Botanical Garden is an educational resource that connects people with nature and fosters respect and enjoyment of plants and conservation. The garden features three main sections: the Orchard Gardens with an orchard, perennial borders, roses and lavender, meadow, and xeric garden; Ojos y Manos, an ethnobotanical garden featuring raised beds for annual crops and an extensive collection

of plants with traditional uses; and the Piñon-Juniper Woodland, a natural area showcasing native plants common to the community. Through exploration of our site, we provide opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to be inspired by and learn from nature.

Our piñon pines (Pinus edulis) are changing this time of year and many of our guests have been asking our Director of Horticulture what’s going on!

As seen in the first image, male pollen cones are almost done and will soon fall.

In slide two, you’ll see tiny female cones that are just getting pollinated. They will spend the next 2–3 years slowly maturing.

And those little “candles” on the branches? New growth! They grow shorter in wetter conditions…like we might see coming up during this year’s monsoon season!
