Like the first breeze of spring, this interview with Juliana Ciano of Reunity Resources is a welcome relief. Santa Fe truly has some great leaders and nutrition programs

On this episode of Community Matters, we speak with Juliana Ciano, executive director of Reunity Resources, about the importance of food waste diversion, preparing for spring gardening, community support, and more.

“Early introduction of baby food, it’s not for nutrition. It’s for palate development,” said Bentley. However, “The way that baby food manufacturers made baby food was what I call very well acclimated to an industrial palate – so smooth texture, on the bland side, not spicy, not pungent, with a sweet profile.”

Zachariah and Mary Ben were struck by the absence of fresh, local and traditional baby foods available near the Navajo Nation in New Mexico, so they began growing their own crops

Almost two years to the day from when we opened Santa Fe Community College as a World Central Kitchen Covid meal production center (that produce 55K meals), we’ve REOPENED to serve New Mexicans displaced by the fires. 1K meals and lunches going out today to Vegas, Glorietta and likely Peñasco & SF. HUGE thanks to SFCC & Chef Jerry, Chef Jackie & the mighty Santa Fe YouthWorks team, and of course, indefatigable WCK teammates Sam, Sandra and Chef Jose Andres. Viva Community….and the Power of Food. We won’t stop till the fires are out!!!

"When Lowden first joined Ancestral Lands in 2011, fifteen or fewer people in all of Acoma were farming, and most were over the age of 40. “They [farmers] were not renewing those seeds and propagating them,” said Lowden.

Through the Ancestral Lands Farm Corp, Lowden began to teach Acoma youth traditional farming methods, seed selection and saving, and food preparation. Since 2020 they have had as many as 65 farmers."

In north-eastern New Mexico, traditional Indigenous farming methods are being passed down to protect against the effects of climate crisis
