Statement from the NAACP Santa Cruz County Branch President
Today, we issue a call to action to not repost or amplify racist and dehumanizing images, but rather share uplifting messages of dignity and truth. Reposting or amplifying racist content only perpetuates the very harm it is intended to cause.
Recently, racist and dehumanizing imagery of Former President Obama and Former First Lady Michelle Obama was circulated publicly. This imagery is deeply harmful and reflects a long and painful history of using racist caricatures to demean and divide.
Instead, we call on our community to uplift images of the Obamas that reflect their true legacy—leadership, service, intellect, and commitment to this nation. We must replace dehumanization with dignity and hatred with truth.
This moment serves as a reminder that racism is not accidental; it is intentional. And silence in the face of it is not neutrality.
This is not the America we aspire to be. This is not the future we want to leave our children.
We urge all people to respond not with outrage alone, but with action. Civic engagement matters. Voting matters. Democracy requires our participation and our vigilance.
Do not share the harmful image/video.
Share truth. Share dignity. Share hope.
Together, we affirm the full humanity of Black people. We will not be erased, demeaned, or silenced. We will continue to stand in truth, in dignity, and in justice.
