This is Hadassah

A first in Israel. A new direction for treating a deadly brain cancer. 🧠

For the first time in Israel, neurosurgeons at the Hadassah Medical Organization have used intracranial Alpha DaRT® radiation therapy to treat a patient with recurrent glioblastoma — one of the most aggressive and difficult-to-treat brain tumors.

Led by Dr. Yigal Shoshan, HMO director of Neurosurgery, Oncology and Stereotactic Radiosurgery, the procedure is part of a Phase 1 clinical trial exploring a potentially new approach to treating recurrent glioblastoma.

What makes Alpha DaRT different? The technology delivers highly localized alpha radiation directly within the tumor, with the goal of maximizing tumor destruction while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy brain tissue.

And in a world first, Dr. Shoshan and his team used two simultaneous trajectories to implant the radiation sources into a large tumor while maintaining precision.

This moment represents years of work — from laboratory research and preclinical studies to technological development and, now, clinical application.

“Seeing the technology reach a patient in Israel for the first time was an exciting moment for everyone who has been part of this journey,” said Dr. Shoshan.

It’s a powerful reminder of what can happen when research, technology and clinical expertise come together to pursue new possibilities for patients.

Lifechanging

He had bought a ticket to Switzerland to end his suffering. Then Hadassah gave him a reason to tear it up.

For years, this man with multiple myeloma endured debilitating pain and severe itching. Conventional treatments had failed, and relief seemed out of reach.

But Dr. Yuval Tal, director of the Allergy and Clinical Immunology Unit at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem, saw another possibility.

“The failure of standard treatments did not mean that all options had been exhausted.”

Dr. Tal and his team looked beyond the usual treatments and focused on the biological mechanisms behind the patient’s symptoms. Their approach led to an unexpected treatment: omalizumab, an antibody therapy typically used for severe allergies and asthma.

Within weeks of three injections, the patient’s pain and itching improved dramatically. He was able to reduce many of his pain medications — and most remarkably, he tore up his ticket to Switzerland.

A treatment that began with a question became a new reason for hope.

At Hadassah, when one path ends, our doctors keep looking for another.

Who knew?

Weird how the only "ethnostate" has the highest religious diversity.

You never know where the journey will lead you. Thank you Hadassah
